You can get a net right here in Barbados at Cave Shepherd on Broad St., Furniture Limited, Lillipum or Woolworth. It would be best to bring one with you since it will be cheaper. You can buy incest repellent here as well. The best type to buy is one by Johnson and Johnson Mosquito cream. It is in a small green bottle. Pricesmart sells them but in 3's. Additionally, you can get it at Popular Discount. This is best because you can't walk around with a net all the time but you can put this on the child's skin. The most that you can get from a mosquito here is dengue fever but there are no cases here of malaria so you don't need to get a vaccine. This is joint pain, pain behind eyes etc.
If a mosquito bites the area turns red and then goes away after 2 days or so unless you are from England. English people usually have water bumps come up. Don't bother too much about it. |

There is nothing wrong with travelling with a mosquito net, but not for Malaria in Barbados. In recent times, a few cases of the disease were imported into the country. Local transmission is non-existent right now.
There is, however, the potential for one to contract Dengue, if for no other reason but that it is on the increase in the Caribbean region with several deaths having occurred in a number of the islands - though not in Barbados.
As regards the insect repellent, any age-appropriate product with DEET as the active ingredient (check the label) is undoubtedly the best. |

A mosquito net doesn't hurt to have around. The Barbados government regularly drives trucks around the island during mosquito season and does pesticide fogging. Currently the island is trying to irradicate mosquitos completely... If you have mosquitos check your property usually mosquitos stick close to their water sources. Don't keep anything anything on your property that is collecting stagnant water. If you have a small pond on your property, you can consider searching online for fish that eat mosquito larvae in ponds and add a few to your pond. |

A mosquito net wouldn't hurt. A local Army Surplus store should be helpful, or online - http://www.armysurplusworld.com/display.asp?subdepartmentID=145 The region has had outbreaks of malaria, but non specifically in Barbados according to this CDC website ... http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationBarbados.aspx This website also has vaccines that you and your husband should be up to date on.
If your 4-month is also above 25 pounds, you may want to talk to your doctor or local health department about taking Malarone for prevention of marlaria. http://www.malarone.com/ |

I'd get one - better to be safe than sorry.
I'd order one online - probably alot cheaper.
Ebay, Amazon etc are good places to start you're search.
Have a great time.
Insect repellent spray, in my opinion doesn't work. If anything it attracts them! I notice I get more bites with it on.
Aparently taking garlic capsules a couple of weeks before hand (every day leading up to you're holiday) prevents them biting you.
I also know from experience - putting lemon or lime and ice on a bite works wonders. I also know that Calamine lotion on a bite immediately stops any itching/pain! Its great and very cheap from chemists in the UK (not very cheap at all in the Caribbean though!).
I'd also take maleria tablets before you go.
Check with you're local GP regarding any injections you may need before you go. I'd do this in advance too as I have been to the Caribbean various times and have always needed the injections 6-8 weeks before I go. |
