If you are flying there YES you do need one. Even though the government says you don't you do need it. They require it now.

NO passport needed if you are a US citizen. Traveling from the mainland to the USVI is like traveling within the United States. USVI are territories of the USA.
You will need your original birth certificate and a valid photo ID (license).

I am sure you dont want to have to go all the way back home if they tell you that you need it. I would bring it just in case.
