good morning,
Currently, you do not need a passport for a cruise that departs and returns to the US. You must have a photo, government issued ID. BUT...if something should happen that the ship cannot return to the US port, having a passport will make your life a whole lot more simple! For example...when the Princess Star had their fire, the passengers had to fly home from Jamaica...
The passports are supposed to take 4 - 6 weeks to get, but with the rush, they are taking upwards of 10 or more weeks!
The government did relax the rules for now, stating that if you apply for a passport, but it hasn't come yet...you can travel as long as you have the photo ID and proof that you did apply for the passport.
Good luck,
Dolores

No, if your cruise leaves from and returns to the US or a US territory (ie. Puerto Rico) you do not need a passport just a state issued ID. |

Yes............. and the Passport Office is so backlogged right now. It can take up to 12 weeks, to process the passport. You will not be boarded in Miami or in Puerto Rico without one if you are visiting an island other than the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. |

when are you leaving ? you should try to get one. right now the deal is that you can go by sea but if something happened and you were in a port for whatever reason (sick/injured) , needed to travel home to U.S.. for family emergency/death in the family, etc. you could not leave the foreign city , to fly home to the U.S. You would have to try to get a passport from the consulate in the foreign land first. then fly home. could be time consuming and expensive. i had heard that the requirement was supposed to be effective this summer ?? but that they are so far behind in processing all the requests that people are being told to just go ahead and go and bring documentation that you applied. i would check this all out before going. CIBT.com is a website / visa processing service and has a 800 number you can call them for the current requirements/status. they will answer questions for free but will charge you if you use them to process your visa or your passport for you. good luck and have a great time. |

The information on this website should be able to help you, as they have "relaxed" the mandatory passport regulations due to understaffing and back-log, but you will have needed to have applied for one... http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html.
In addition, if you already know which cruise line or are dealing with a travel agent, they should be able to supply additional information. There was a time when even if you didn't have a passport you could cruise, but couldn't depart the ship in certain ports. |
