Do i need to take Malaria tablets to go to the Dominican Republic?

Since October 2004, there have been several reported cases of malaria in areas frequented by U.S. and European tourists including La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province in which many beach resorts are located. Malaria risk is significantly higher for travelers who go on some of the excursions to the countryside offered by many resorts. Prior to coming to the Dominican Republic, travelers should consult the CDC web site (below) for the most up-to-date recommendations on malarial prophylaxis and any travel notices or announcements.

No, just drink bottled water and avoid eating from the street vendors although they have the best food around, just try not to eat anything you don't know what it is and if you go out to the beach or the country at night just use mosquito repellent and you'll be fine.

IF YOU GO TO THE CDC (CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL) WEBSITE THEY WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY.

It doesn't hurt to take them, but I didn't.

No, as long as you are not going into the jungles or crossing into Haiti.

mam-maw
i went without pills. never crossed my mind

indigrrl
While in Peace Corps there, we were issued Aralen (somewhat less nasty than other anti-malarials). The highest risk is usually along the Haitian border and near Los Haitises nat'l park (by Samana bay). Many volunteers weighed the risks and decided to stop taking the Aralen. It tastes horrible and can cause weird dreams as well as some other side effects from long-term use. Look it up and make your own decision based on where you'll be and how long you'll be there.

germanknowitall
No you do not. I visited my PC friend there in March and she lives on the border of Haiti. I traveled all over that island and came back fine.

No you don't. But don't drink the water and carry Tums or similar product as the foods, while very good, are foriegn on your stomach.

Have fun!
