Great to have both. Traveler's checks are a great way to carry US money down, and then have it converted at a local bank or hotel.
Current conversion rates:
1 US Dollar = 2.72000 East Caribbean Dollar
1 East Caribbean Dollar (XCD) = 0.36765 US Dollar (USD)
My wife, peeking over my shoulder: "The EC dollar has one of them most consistent conversion rates of all currencies across the world!" Big hometown booster, that one. Loves her region.

In most caribbean Islands US dollars are widely accepted. But is always better to have the local money.

No matter what anyone says the American $ talks anywhere in the Caribbean. Keep it small. Dollar bills are the best. Anyone can convert the math in their head. Not for major purchases though. If you just need a taxi, beer, lunch, etc. singles will do the trick. It's always good to have some local cash on hand. But I always bring a big stack of dollars with me every winter. ok matt

Yep, you can use USD in Grenada. But, carry EC for all the little shops, and remember small bills a good as many shops don't have a lot of $$ to make change for big bills.
