Do you believe that Jamaica is a bad place?

Everywhere I go in the U.S, Canada or United Kingdom people are surprise to hear that I am Jamaican, maybe this is because of how I act. People should know that Jamaica is a CIVILIZED COUNTRY.

Absolutely NOT!! But then I am Jamaican as well. I move to the UK 2 years ago and i was pretty shocked as well when people didnt believe I was from Jamaica because apparently i was too 'posh' to be from Jamaica. I was appalled. I told them that i was so not posh and that all my friends and the people i associated with acted just like me. I was then made to understand that Jamaicans had a reputation for being very rough, arrogant and loud. After living here, i guess i can understand how they would arrive at that conclusion because it is really sad to say but a lot of the Jamaicans i come across (especially in the areas were there are a lot of Jamaicans living together) act just like that. I think that because we know that Jamaicans have a reputation for being proud and not take **** from anyone, we take it to another level when we are in a country where we feel like our status in society is being threatned or we feel marginalized. We therefore feel that in order to keep our 'Jamaicaness' we need to behave in a way which we wouldnt behave if we were in Jamaica. Thats my opinion anyway.

its beautiful and i luv their accent ^.^ i wish i could visit

Well Jamaica has a reputation for being real laid back, I don't think that's a bad thing. I really like Jamaicans myself because of their warm friendly nature. I would have thought Haiti was worse.

When I was in Jamaica, we had a lot of people who were pretty foward coming up to us wanting to sell us things. Once we got used to it, it didn't bother us. However, some people can't get used to that and don't feel comfortable being there, but that doesn't mean it's a bad place. I thought the island was beautiful and climbing Dunn's River Falls was a lot of fun,

I rediscovered my spirituality in Jamaica . I plan on visiting there again next year . I think the problem is that people go there expecting to see Hawaii and just be in an extension of America , and when they see the poverty it shocks them . I love Jamaica .

I do not believe that Jamaica is a bad place. I keep going back, so I must like the country & its people. It's like anywhere else you go, there are good spots/people and bad spots/people.

Love Jamaica! I've been there 5 times and have taken my son there 3 times.....for some roots and culture! I would move there if I thought I could support myself and my son. How much do teachers make there? Enough to support a family of 2? I barely make enough in the U.S. to survive! If I am going to be broke...I may as well be broke in a place I want to be ...............I mean I can always return to the U.S. eventually.........ONE LOVE

Sherbert
How, exactly, do Jamaicans act? I don't think that people should be categorized because of where they are from. I have never heard of Jamaica or Jamaicans having a bad reputation. But I have never been there before, either. I am going in April, though, and I am looking forward to having a wonderful time.

NO. Jamaica is a great place, probably one of the greatest on Earth. There is no other place I would rather be.

I'm from Jamaica. I've gotten so many stupid questions. We are very civilized, educated people. There are many ignorant people out there who don't know any better. Jamaica is not a bad place. There is crime but name one country on this planet where crime doesn't exist...

jamaica is not a bad place i've been there for my aunt's wedding, only if you go the country part then it's bad or the "yard" as they say. But everywhere has bad areas so it's nothing don't let it bother you.

When the news shows some resorts with Armed guards it is a turn off. I love Jamaica and have met some real nice people there. The press can do a lot of damage!
