Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551,

Yes, as of this year you do.

Terri
As of January 1, 2007, a US passport is required for all foreign travel, including the Bahamas, Canada, Mexico, etc.

YES, you do need a passport for your trip from USA-->Bahamas.

Please note that if you're going in early 2007, you may be eligible for a rebate of 100% of US Passport application fees ($97/adult & $82/child). Details and 1-page rebate form: http://tinyurl.com/y87wzz

Here's the fine print from the US Department of State:
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

If you can find a way to drive from The Bahamas then the answer is no, but if you are flying into the US then yes. Effective January 2007 you do have to have a PP to enter the US via air. Land borders are delayed until January 2008.

PS... If you can find a way to drive from The Bahamas please let everyone know! :)

yankee_sailor
notice the key words in the Westrn Hemisphere Travel Initiative.if travelling by AIR yes as of the end of this month .....if by SEA then the end of Jan 2008

this implies if youre on a cruise ship no passsport....BUT CHECK WITH THE CRUSIE LINE!!!!!

Now, if you are American and travelling directly to and from Puerto RIco or the US Virigin Islands ( and only PR and the VI) you do NOT and never will need a passport as both are US Territories

kiki
You must have one even on a cruise (travel agent will let you know) You go through the post office to get one and it usually takes 6-8 weeks.
