you would be safer with a passport, and probably need one even traveling by sea.
when i got mine, they told me it would take 8 to 10 weeks when i mailed every thing off, i received my passport in four weeks in the mail. |

You DO NOT need a passport to enter the Bahamas by sea (cruise ship) until at least sometime in Summer 2008. I just went there on a cruise less than 2 weeks ago. You do need an official (raised seal) birth certificate and your driver's license. |

It depends on when you are traveling. The government has set a tentative date of summer 2008 to implement the land and sea travel phase for passports. The length of time a passport takes depends greatly on the method you use. The standard process can take as much as 3 months because of a backlog in applications. Expediters are a great way to speed up the process. Try one of these sites:

I went in May, and no passport was needed. I just had my US issued Birth Certificate.

it would take at least one week to get a passport but some boats would let you on but if you taken a cruise or expensive boat you have to have a Bahamian passport because the rules have changed. |

took me 3 weeks and no i did not pay the extra expedite fees. i believe they changed it so that you need a passport no matter how or where if you are leaving the country you MUST have a passport ! |
