I have to agree. I've been to Jamaica twice, but staying at resorts, where I'm sure the people are thankful for all the jobs they created. However with the many employees at the resorts, they were all Jamaican, they don't want to give what jobs they do have to other than their own. Which I don't blame them, it is a very poor country. On the ride to the resort I saw many women washing clothes on rocks in streams, etc. and I started to feel guilty like "rich American coming to this poverty stricken country", but then I thought, don't feel bad, you are giving them a job! And they are very grateful for them jobs, they are lovely people. If it wasn't so poor, and I thought I could get a job there, I would consider it also. Good luck.
Let me re-interate....
I don't think I am better than any Jamaican, or anyone else for that matter. I made many friends in Jamaica and I am somewhat jealous for what they have....a more laid back, simple life. I'm glad the resorts are helping the economy down there, yes, I think we got the most respectable treatment while there (more than I can say for many American vacation places). And that was not just for their job, they are real people, and that's what I like about it. And I don't think they should give the jobs to outsiders, because America has learned the hard way about helping everyone else and not their own country. I think Jamaica is fine, personally I don't wish the poverty on those who have to live that way, I realize not everyone in Jamaica lives in poverty. And if I was from Jamaica, I would want to go back, also, I am sure. This American life has its perks, but it isn't all it's cracked up to be. |

Do not go to Jamaica. if you must set out on your own and leave family behind (you should reconsider) you have many choices in the Caribbean that are a million times better than Jamaica. It is a depressed shithole, to put it bluntly. Jamaicans are all over the other Caribbean islands looking for jobs because there aren't any in Jamaica. Ok? Please don't do it.
If you're an Aussie, you can go to any of the Commonwealth islands, such as the Bahamas, British Virgin, Caymans, and even Bermuda without a visa. Just contact the embassies of those places for more info. |
