As a previous person said, you do not need one as yet if you are an American citizen. Nevertheless, you will need one from June 1.Presently, you need to show proof of identity as well as proof of US citizenship when entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the countries of the Caribbean by land or sea.
Acceptable documents include: U.S. Passport Book, U.S. Passport Card, or other document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.

U.S. citizens who do not have a single document verifying identity and citizenship must present both an identification and citizenship document; for example, a driver’s license and a copy of a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.

it is best to start getting one now to be on the safe side.

Well, you got two idiot answers! NO, you do not need a passport to travel between the U.S. mainland and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You do not need a passport to travel between states. You only need a passport to travel to FOREIGN countries.

You do not need a passport to go to the US Virgin Islands if you're a US citizen... that being said, it is a good idea to have one with you. the USVI's very close to the BVI's. You'll need one if you want to go to the BVI's and I've also heard of planes being diverted to the BVI's in which case it would be very hard for you to get out of the airport if you didn't have a passport.

What IS IT with AmeriKans and PASSPORTS? Why do AmeriKans think they can go to foreign countries with an old utility bill for proof of citizenship, when the REST of the world needs a passport?

That being said... THIS is the OFFICIAL STATEMENT from the U.S. Embassy in Barbados:

Beginning JANUARY 12, 2009, all nationals and citizens of VISA WAIVER PROGRAM COUNTRIES are REQUIRED to obtain a travel authorization prior to initiating travel by AIR or SEA to the United States and it's territories for TEMPRARY business or pleasure. Authorization may be obtained online through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) at http://esta.cbp.dhs.gov

You do not need a passport to travel to/from the virgin islands if you are a US citizen same as if you traveled to Puerto Rico.

yes you need a passport if you go out of the country. They're gonna need a proof that you have a valid reason to stay in the u.s..Speaking fluent english is not enough. Even spies can do it.

Yes. Some States in the US are trying to pass a law. So that anyone traveling between States have to have a passport. Just get one for yourself it's good for 10 years.

CHARLIE IS THE THE IDIOT!!!!!!! SCREW YOU!
