Passports are now required for all US citizens. The leniency one spoke of is for travel up until Sept. 30th 2007. This is pending that you sent in your application AND are able to print a passport receipt from travel.state.gov I know it says 7 - 10 days for it to process and show online you applied, but I have some people that sent it in over a month ago that are STILL waiting for there name to appear on here. There will be no exceptions to this receipt. After this date it is required to have a valid passport.

I am assuming that you are American. You can travel without your passport until September 30, 2007 BUT you will need a Govt Id PLUS proof that you have already applied for your passport, to show immigration when you touch down on US soil.

I am going for my honeymoon in August. Applied in late June for expedited service but was told that it wasn't necessary because you can temporarily travel to the Caribbean without a passport so long as you have photo ID and printed reciept of your application. You HAVE TO apply for one, but its okay if you don't get it in time at present. They may likely change this rule later on when its not so busy to travel!

The new law says you need one to travel to the caribbean.Due to the backlog of passports you can now travel without one until September 30,2007.You will however have to show a printed receipt that you applied for yours.Enjoy your vacation in Jamaica.I love that place so much.

A few friends and I will be going this summer they did not have there passport and after many phone calls were told that they have until next year 08 to get the passport. Because of the high demand if you don't have your passport have at least two form of ID.

Yes, I have been twice, to Ocho Rios and Montego Bay in Jamaica, but it has been a few years ago, but I did not have a passport either time. I had a copy of my birth certificate and a driver's license and was freely admitted into Jamaica. Just to be sure; however, check with your local airport and they can let you know for sure. By the way I had an amazing time in Jamaica and will be going back real soon. Happy travels!!!!!!

well i am canadian and i went to Jamaica in January of this year i did not need a passport. So no you don't need a passport, but you need an original birth certificate and one proof of ID, like a drivers license or health card.

mellay
normally you do need just a birth certificate. There is a new visa rule for people to come here but it isnt into full effect as yet so its best ot have a passport atleast.

Yes you do. All US Citizens need a passport to travel outside of the country. Birth Certificates are no longer accepted as the only identification to travel. Try getting your passport before you go. It usually take up tp 6 weeks to get one.

Yep and a passport to go too.. Have Fun :)

ajaynac
To get there and to get back... unless I'm mistaken, you can still use your birth certificate because they're having issues with the new passport law. But it has to be the government certified one. Otherwise, call the local USPS or government bureau and ask them. They're the ones that carry the passport applications.
