Those guys above me are WRONG! You do NOT need a passport period. Why would the US Government allow you to leave the country and not let you back in. That is crazy. No country is going to let you leave w/o a passport and then tell you you can't come back without one! Also Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. Flying there should be as easy as it is getting to Miami. As a matter of fact if you don't believe me, look at the news. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are about to have a huge spike in tourism because of the government's new passport rules. |

No you do not need a passport. Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. Currency is the same, postal service is the same as if you are traveling to another state. Have a nice trip and wear mostly cotton clothing since the weather is very humid. |

Travel Requirements
No passport or immunizations are necessary for a U.S. citizen or national traveling to Puerto Rico. However, some form of identification, e.g. a driver’s license, passport or an original copy of one's birth certificate, should be carried to evidence U.S. citizenship or nationality. Aliens traveling to the Commonwealth are required to have a valid passport and an appropriate U.S. visa, if required. The requirements for pets are: l) Tag with name of pet, owner's name and telephone number, and 2) Rabies quarantine certificate from veterinary doctor stating that pet has had a rabies shot. For more information contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture Puerto Rico office, Veterinary Division at (787) 766-6050. No currency exchange is necessary as the U.S. Dollar is the official currency used in Puerto Rico. |

Currently you don't need a passport to Puerto Rico because it is a protectorate of the United States.
From the state website, here is the following guidelines:
--------------------------------------...
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
*******The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

etwtravel is correct! New laws went into effect this week!
That said, many people visiting Puerto Rico take excusion flights to nearby islands to visit or shop. If you go to another island, other that the U.S. Virgin Islands, you will need a passport to get back to Puerto Rico. |
