Not from the USA but if you are comming from another country then you should check with the airlines you are using or check any travel guide on the virgin islands. I have been there a few times and have a time share there so I am 100% positive on this. |

A passport is not yet mandatory to travel to the virgin islands if you are an American citizen. a state issued id is sufficient(drivers license) . Although the united states has implemented a new law that as of Dec. 06 a passport will become mandatory to travel when leaving the continental US. |

no, but it would be a good idea to get one because you are going to have to have one for any travel outside of the us:
New Requirements for Travelers
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement. |

I live in St. Thomas, and it's interesting you mention this because it was on the local news yesterday. As of 1/1/07 the US government will require showing a passport when RETURNING from any Caribbean nation (such as Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands, etc.) EXCEPT Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. (As they are US possesions, they are exempt from this requirement.) You can still use a Birth Certificate/Driver's liscence combo to show proof of citizenship when you return to the US mainland. They are going to start it after the first of January, 2007, but not enough US citizens have passports. So they may postpone it another year until 1/1/08 when passports will be required when re-entering the US from Canada and Mexico.

Get a passport. Safe to have when out of the country. You will probably use it again in the next 10 years, anyway. Plus, like the other replies say...you will HAVE to have it to go anywhere next year.
Have a wonderful time!! |
