On the American side no, but the british side yes, most only require a birth certificate to verify your american status, but it's smarter to travel with a passport anyway so that you don't have to carry your birth certificate since that information is listed on your passport. The American virgin islands are commonwealths so you don't really need a passport to travel there, but if you're traveling to the British side of the Virgin Islands you need a passport. Go to the website listed under this response to check out the full detail of what you need in terms of documents to travel in the country. |

It depends on when you are planning on traveling and where you are traveling from.
If the US I know you will be required to have one starting the first of next year. But you should visit the official web site of the specific island you are thinking of visiting, you might also check
www.tripadvisor.com
they are a good resource. |

The US virgin islands are a US territory and a US citizen would not need a passport, but it is always a good idea to travel with a passport to verify your citizenship any where in the world |

As of right now, you do not have to have a passport to visit the USVI and return from there, however, if you plan on visiting any of the British Virgin Islands (which are so close you can actually see some of them) while you are there then you MUST have an official copy, with seal, of your birth certificate or a passport to return to the USVI following those excursions. BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2007, you will have to have a passport to travel to and from the USVI because of the new security regulations that will begin on that date. |

not required for us virgin islands if a us citizen. would be a good idea if you got one thought because of tightening requirements:
New Requirements for Travelers
October 3, 2006: This information does not reflect important changes to the WHTI expected from pending legislation. We will update this page once that legislation has been finalized.
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
January 8, 2007 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
January 1, 2008 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.
