Yes indeed! I just got back from a 7 day Caribbean cruise and while my passport was still good, hubby had to have a new one as his had expired.

Go to your nearest post office as soon as possible, because it does take a while to get them back.

If you are an American citien taking a cruise that begins and ends in the unoted States, but may stop in other Caribbean countries, the answer is NO! See website below and read top half of the page carefully to see that passports are not needed for SEA travel to and from the Caribbean until after SUMMER 2008. Now, SOME cruise lines want their passengers to have passports....so the best thing to do is CALL your cruise line to ASK. See 2nd website to see the reg on cruises beginning and ending in the U.S.

Just saw the answer which says there is a huge backlog for passports and they are taking a long tome...NOT trure...that is OVER. ait is currently taking the normal 4 to 8 weeks to get a passport...but there will be another grand rush next SUMMER!

Effective 1/1/08, U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driverâ€™s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

The requirement for a passport for all travel will probably be instituted in the summer of 2008.

Many Caribbean countries (especially English speaking ones) do NOT require a U.S. passport. They encourage tourism and want it to be as easy as possible.

However, I would strongly recommend a passport because:
A) As noted earlier it is the easiest document to use to gain entry to such countries.
B) The U.S. itself has put harder restrictions on entry so when you come back your driver's license might not be sufficient (especially with some states now saying they'll issue to illegal immigrants). Also lines for U.S. citizens with passports typically move fast due to the passport reading machines.

P.S. There is a huge backlog in getting new passports. Even expedited it taking much longer than the estimate they'll give you. I think I've seen mention of waits up to 6 months.

Bottom line - YES. Depending on your country of origin (I'm guessing you are American) the Homeland Security regulations have been placed over all travel domestic and international requiring you to carry a form of ID. Travel on a cruise ship is more complicated because you may be entering the international waters and if you want to leave the cruise ship to see the sights on one of the Islands then you may have to pass customs and immigration at each port. Check your itinerary and call the cruise line to understand any other details such as travel visas, etc.

No, as long as you return on the cruise ship. But since a passport is going to be necessary.someday soon, you should apply for one as soon as possible. The turn around is now about 3 weeks. If you have time, I suggest doing it. And right now, the gov is allowing people who have applied for a passport to travel on their application confirmation code plus a birth certificate.
