If you are flying out of the US to any place you positively DO need a passport. If you are going on a cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean and you will be traveling in February you DO NOT need a passport, only your birth certificate and a government issued photo ID. HOWEVER, many cruise lines strongly urge you to get a passport so that if there is an emergency (i.e., you get ill, or a problem with the ship) you can fly back home with no problem. Since its already mid-February its probably too late for you to get a passport for your travel because normal processing time is 4 to 6 weeks and even if you lived near a passport agency it still takes 2 weeks to get expedited processing after you take all of your paperwork and the application to that office. And the fee is $97.00 per adult, not $150.00 as someone said. Check the web site below

Yes, you need a passport if you fly to the Bahamas or the Caribbean.

here is a link if you are a US citizen
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

If you cruise, some cruise lines are also requiring a passport and some will accept a valid photo ID and your birth certificate. You will have to call the cruise line to find out their requirements.

Good Luck

If you are travelling on a cruise, you only need a passport if you plan on getting off the boat. If you are not then you do not need a passport. If you are travelling by plane most definitely you need a passport. You can get a US passport made rush for you in 3 days last I check it was about $150. Make sure you go to the right website.
