We are part of USA since 1898 and you don't need no passport to travel to Puerto Rico if you are American citizen.

Mel S
Puerto Rico is now part of the United States, so no, you do not need a pastport

They never ask me for anything when I visit. I just buy my plane ticket and board the plane at whatever time the ticket says. The only place I've ever been asked for an i.d. is at the airport bar. since i look so young.

PR is a US territory. Those new immigration laws applies only if you want to re-enter to a US territory. If you take a flight from US to PR or vice-versa counts as a domestic flight, in other words, you still within US territory so you can use your DL or state ID, if you are a citizen or green card holder.

Pic ID is FINE!

Going to Puerto Rico is a domestic flight so the only thing you need is a valid photo id. That is of course assuming that you are a US citizen. If you are not then you will need a passport.

If you are returning to the US from foreign nations in the Caribbean by air, then the answer is yes. Know, though, that some Caribbean islands are US TERRITORIES -- you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico *I REPEAT* U DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO PUERTO RICO or the US Virgin Islands by sea, air or spaceship from the continental US: it's like driving from Manhattan to Montana (you will need to prove who you are at airport security -- don't forget a driver's license or similar id, plus a certified (raised seal) birth certificate for returning to the mainland from the US Virgin Islands).

Just went to Puerto Rico last week, so I feel I can give you the current information! You do need a valid photo id that is issued by a governmental agency. If you have a driver's lic. that is fine. Or get a state id card at your DMV. The fine print says that if a traveler does not have a photo id, they are subject to additional screening, so it does offer exceptions, but that will delay you. If you try that, take a copy of your birth certificate and social sec. card. But, try to get that gov. photo id, it will be a breeze. It is not true you will need a passport to return to the states. P.R. is a territory, and you do not need a passport. It is compared to crossing state lines. There may be prohibitions, such as fruit products, but no passports needed. You need to pass through the regular screening as well as an agriculture one. If you are under 18 you do not need a photo id. My 16 year old daughter was asked for hers when we left P.R., I told the man she was 16 and was my daughter and he let her go. I thought he might push it, after all, he asked for it so I thought he might push his authority. Our group had 2 over 18 (one had a driver's lic. one had a state issued id he got just for this purpose.) and 2 under that needed no id at all. If you get an id card, remember they need time to mail it to you. The Calif. site says it can take 8 weeks, but we got it sooner. Have fun!

All you need is a picture id, yes it is true. Here is the site, http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm

Here is what it says, Acceptable IDs include: Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) that meets REAL ID benchmarks (All states are currently in compliance)

According to the OFFICIAL U.S. STATE DEPT. WEB SITE... you will need a PASSPORT to re-enter the MAINLAND U.S. AFTER JUNE 1ST, 2009. WHAT IS IT with you people and PASSPORTS.. you act like it's such a big deal.? What is WRONG with AMERIKANS needing PASSPORTS to go to FOREIGN COUNTRIES LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD?

Unlike all these 'travel experts' on here.. most of who have never been outside the State where they were born.. I have not only READ the latest information on PASSPORTS but even have COPY OF IT and it CLEARLY STATES that the ONLY EXCEPTIONS for having a passport is limited to CHILDREN UNDER AGE 16 who are TRAVELING AS PART OF A RECOGNIZED GROUP.. at this time THERE ARE NO OTHER EXCEPTIONS.
