Do you need a passport to travel to the Virgin Islands?

My husband and I are going to the Virgin Islands (one of the U.S. territories) in June. I've read that passports are 'recommended' but not required. Any advice?

i live in the us virgin islands.
these are considered to be u.s. territory. you don't need a passport as long as you are a U.S. citizen. I f you plan to venture to the BVI's then a passport will be required. Make sure you do have official forms of I.D. such as drivers license and social security card and when departing the islands you do go through customs because it is a port of entry.

it's a beautiful place. just be careful not to walk alone at night. don't show all your money when spending as many times someone is watching. and always greet people with good morning, good afternoon, and good night. this is a local custom.

be safe and have fun!!!

If you are American citizens, you do not now and never will need passports to travel to U.S. territories. All you need is a photo I.d....just like flying to another state.

NO YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT FOR U.S. AND IT'S TERRITORIES.... SUCH AS US VIRGIN ISLANDS, PUERTO RICO, GUAM. I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE ANSWERING THIS QUESTION WHEN THEY DO NOT HAVE THE FACTS. THE GUY FURTHER SAYS THAT YOU DO AND EVEN PUT A LINK FOR TRAVEL.GOV...WELL IF HE FOLLOWED THE LINK OR BOTHERED TO READ IT HE WOULD FIND THAT YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT FOR US VIRGIN ISLANDS.

sorry, it drives me crazy when people give bogus info.

Actually, on June 1 the passport rules are changing; everyone will need a passport, by sea, land or air.

They will require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.
