US CITIZENS
US Citizens traveling to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada or Alaska must present proof of citizenship in the form of:

A valid passport (recommended)
Original birth certificate or state-issued certified copy of a birth certificate with Picture ID, or
Original Naturalization papers
In addition to these requirements, all guests 16 years of age or older must provide an official photo ID

you most certainly do need a passport to travel to the bahamas, caribbean, everywhere really. however depending on the country you go to you may not need to have a visa. contact the country's embassy or consulate to ask if you need to have a tourist visa in order to enter the country. for most caribbean countries you can enter the country with just your U.S. passport.

Bahamas no, some of the other islands, yes.
It all depends on where you are gpoing, some of the islands are French, some Dutch, etc.
You woud need one for them. Some, like the U.S. Virgin Islands, you do not.
But that all changes Jan. 1, 2007.
At that time you will need a passport for travel anywhere outside the U.S., including travel to Mexico & Canada.

No ..not this year...but it does help to get thru customs..just your birth certificate and ss card will work.. you will need a passport as of Jan 1, 2008...

Yep! We needed one one our cruise to Nassau. The islands are owned by other countries (or they are their own country), so a passport is definetly needed!

when i went to puerto rico and the caribbean a few years back, i didn't need a passport

Depends on where you're from. Here in the US, for now all you need is a valid driver's license or photo id. Some countries, like Dom. Republic, make you get a $10 tourism card and take your thumbprint if you don't have a passport, but it's no big deal. I also regularly visit the site Andie mentioned. Pasting a portion:
