Hello?

Do you or do you not need a passport from NY to Puerto Rico?

First I hear that a Passport is not needed because Puerto Rico is part of the U.S.A. Then I hear that you do need it for security reasons... my passport is expired right now, and my friends are planning on heading there at the end of June... what's the truth?

If you are returning to the US from foreign nations in the Caribbean by air, then the answer is yes. Know, though, that some Caribbean islands are US territories -- you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico * I REPEAT: U DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO PUERTO RICO* or the US Virgin Islands by sea, air or spaceship from the continental US: it's like driving from Manhattan to Montana (you will need to prove who you are at airport security -- don't forget a driver's license or similar id, plus a certified (raised seal) birth certificate for returning to the mainland from the US Virgin Islands).

Because Puerto Rico is indeed a US territory, you do NOT need a passport as you will not be clearing Immigration/Passport Control. However, you will go through USDA/Customs check, which is a territorially mandated procedure. For that purpose, some sort of picture ID is indeed required: NY driver licence, state ID, expired passport, etc etc. At any rate, to check in for a flight today, even domestic, picture ID is mandated to comply with USA PATRIOT as well as REAL ID.

You Do Not need a passport. Last week I went to PR and I only used my drivers license as ID.

No, you do not need a passport to go to and from Puerto Rico. You do however need a state-issued I.D. to check in with the airline and to go through security. You do not need an I.D. to go through the USDA checkpoint or anything else.

Just got back last weekend. You do not need a passport. Just a government issued photo ID, like a drivers license or non-drivers ID issued at the motor vehicles.

Crica
i've never been asked for one of them. i just show them my military i.d. and they let me in and out as i please.

if you join the guard, they can give you one the same day.

everyone who said 'no passport as far as government is concerned' is correct.

HOWEVER

some AIRLINES require a passport on the lame excuse "the plane might be diverted"...what they are doing is trying to dodge liability for bringing in illegal aliens

SO CHECK YOUR AIRLINE FIRST and see what their gig is.

NO, you don't need a passport, just a state ID or license if you are US citizen or green card holder.

This is from the DHS page:
Traveling to and from U.S. Territories. U.S. Citizens traveling to and returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the U.S. territory and do not need to present a passport.

U.S. territories include American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Swains Island and U.S. Virgin Islands.
