I didn't think it was all that dangerous, but the drug culture is huge! Everywhere we went, people were offering us pot. Most of the locals seemed to be pretty high all of the time.
I would recommend staying close to your resort unless you are feeling super adventurous.

I just love Jamaica. We took a ride to a plantation on the top of a hill that overlooked all of Jamaica. It was beautiful. Make sure you do the booze cruise and any other boat trips they have. If you stay within the grounds and the town to shop it's not dangerous at all. Kingston at night is not good. Go to Negril.
