Do you think you should let your dog sleep in the cage?

i have a small bosten terrior and my mom makes her sleep in the cage but she goes in there when she is punished do you think that it is cruel to make her think she is being punished when she is just going to bed

Depending. if we let her sleep on the bed, its not so clean la... but i have this place, like a big mat, with a very nice floral design and a blanket and bolster for my doggy, the cage is for punishment. only when she does something wrong, if not, there will be not more fear about the cage anymore... heez
cheers

Some dogs just can't be left out alone at night. My rottweiler sleeps in the cage, and yes, we use it for discipline too. Its his safe haven. He runs to it when he's been naughty, then again at bedtime because he knows he'll get a treat. It works out fine, and doesn't alter his personality in the least. Suggest to her to offer a treat at bedtime. The dog will learn the difference.

Not really..we do the same thing with my dog..basically lets him know..that it's quiet time <33 I don't look at it as being mean..as long as you don't keep them in their for a really long time during the day. =]

I think if she has to sleep in the cage. You need to find another way to discipline her. Like kids dogs know what is punishment, etc.. so she is getting mixed signals.

karen wonderful
The cage should only be used for one purpose. My dogs go into the crate when I leave and when it is time for bed. They are scolded when they are bad.

NO!, if youre gonna have a dog to keep in a cage you might as well leave it at the place you got it. i think its horrible to lock up the one "family member" that loves you unconditionally and w/o judgment. put yr mom in the cage n see how she likes it. ha!

bujiboy
if the dog is trained to to do its thing outside the house I think its fine to let them sleep outside the cage

Le Miccine
Oddly enough, our dogs (we've had several who have enjoyed full lives with us) have always considered their crates their "safe place," including when we told them to "go to cage" beause they were being punished. I think that for the dogs the crate was a place in which they could escape the consequences of what they knew was bad behavior and they knew they would be welcomed back into the family when the crate was opened.

I wouldn't worry too much about combining the sleeping and punishment space. One of our dogs used to go into the crate, pull the door closed, and pop down the lock when he felt threatened (thunder, too many people, or a frown from one of us). He could also open the lock when he felt like communing with the world again.

If the dog is to use the cage as a "den", DO NOT PUNISH the dog by caging it!! The "den" should be a source of comfort, not a traumatic experience. The theory of "denning" a dog is so when the dog's human is unavailabe, the dog feels secure and comforted. Good Luck!

Potitin
Why not? It is a still a dog...
