No you do not...PR is a part of hte US so all the people there are US citizens....so no need for passports..

"International Travel
A Permanent Resident of the United States can travel freely outside of the US. A passport from the country of citizenship is normally all that is needed. To reenter the US a Permanent Resident normally needs to present the green card (Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) for readmission. A reentry permit is needed for reentry for trips greater than one year but less than two years in duration."

Just a note: Last time I went to PR ( back in January) they were asking people if they were American Citizens and if they weren't they were asking for passports. When I asked the flight attendant why they were doing that, he responded because Illegal Immigrants were getting into the US by plane . So just be careful, the Puerto Rican government can get shady sometimes.

If any one tells you that you do need a passport they are INCORRECT.

As a legal permanent resident (green card) of the US you can travel to Puerto Rico (and WORK) without having to have a passport.

Puerto Rico is treated the same as any other state in the US with regards to travel.

Puerto Rico is a US territory and USA gave us the opportunity to be an American citizen. So, because of that any US Resident or Citizen are able to travel to ANY Us territory with any problem and that includes Puerto Rico. You just need a picture ID just for traveling and security purposes. (I'm a Puertorican)

gabaganoush ( sp) gave the best answer with the correct State Department link........but living is ST Thomas let me add.......bring the passport and the Green Card anyway.!!!! while legally traveling to and from PR and the VI is no different traveling from LA to Boston, the reality is:...there are a LOT of illegals trying to get on the plane in PR and you might get asked "extra" questions which a Mass license may not answer!

You might want to check with any travel agent or your City Offices just to be on the safe side. They are asking for passports for almost anywhere that you travel, especially since you are only a legal resident.
