Jamaica was discovered by Columbus approx. 500 years ago, and after slavery and colonization, Jamaica gained their independence in 1962... August 7 to be exact. Jamaican consists of 2.6-2.7 Million people, and is located in the Caribbean, neighbouring with countries Haiti and the Dominican Rebublic, Cuba, Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas. Jamaica is also "faced-in-front-of" countries like Mexico, Belize, Panama, and Costa Rica. Jamaican's official language is English, although there is a variation of the Jamaican dialect which is loosely called "Patois" but its considered by linguists as the Jamaican Vernacular. Jamaica's currency is the Dollar, with exchange rates from US $1 = JA $65 on floating dollar, since May 16, 2006. Jamaica is divided in 3 counties - Cornwall, Middlesex, and Surrey, and is divided into 14 parishes... Kingston & St. Andrew (merged in 1), St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland, and St. Thomas. The capital city is Kingston. The most financially wealthy city back in the days was Port Royal, where trading was at its peak. Spanish Town, in St. Catherine was considered the Old Capital - it was the capital of Jamaica at one point. The tourist capital is Montego Bay. Air Jamaica is the national airline, with other flights transiting into the island, including American, Air Canada, British Airways, Delta, Contintenal, United US Airways, Spirit, Virgin Atlantic, LTU, Martinair, Northwest, and others.
My two cents from the Jamaican. Hope thats of help. |
