I went there for 2 weeks when I was a kid, and it was great. The snorkeling is top-notch, the coral reefs are full of life and color. We went to a place called Stingray City, which is a large sand bank about 3 feet deep, and stingrays have learned that if they come up, they will get fed. Don't worry, they won't hurt you, as long as you don't accidentally poke their stingers under their tails or put your hand in their mouth. It was awesome holding a huge stingray 5 feet in diameter before watching it swim off. The water all around the island is a beautiful deep blue, and crystal clear, you can see right to the bottom in 20 feet of water.

It's also an international banking haven, so it has lots of money.

It's well know for great Scuba Diving sites.

Been there many times. We own property there. Whether or not you like it will depend on what you are interested in doing. Divers will love it. The best diving in the Caribbean is off of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Consult a travel agent who specialized in dive travel or in Caribbean travel.

Theres a turtle sanctuary there. And the sailors that landed there (British) named part of it Hell. :)

Norm
Grand Cayman is a very clean neat island.

Be sure to visit the turtle farm and also be sure to go to Hell. Hell is a little town and you will see where it got it's name when you get there. You can mail your friends a postcard and it will be postmarked "Hell".

It is a pricey island. Food in restaurants is about double what I am used to.

If you are a beach person bring your towel and relax on the "eight Mile Beach. Never very crowded.

Have a good trip.

The Cayman Islands - often referred to as The Caymans, or (more correctly) just Cayman - were first sighted by Christopher Columbus on May 10, 1503 during his disastrous fourth and final voyage to the New World. The first recorded English visitor to the islands was Sir Francis Drake, who landed there in 1586 and named them the Cayman Islands after the Neo-Taíno nations term (caiman) for crocodile (Zayas, 1914).

The first recorded permanent inhabitant of the Cayman Islands, Isaac Bodden, was born on Grand Cayman around 1700. He was the grandson of the original settler named Bodden who was likely one of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the taking of Jamaica in 1655.

The islands, along with nearby Jamaica, were ceded to England in 1670 under the Treaty of Madrid. They were governed as a single colony with Jamaica until 1962 when they became a separate British overseas territory and Jamaica became an independent commonwealth realm.

The island of Grand Cayman was severely damaged by the Category Five Hurricane Ivan in September 2004, which destroyed many buildings and damaged 70% of them. Power, water and communications were all disrupted. Ivan was the worst hurricane to hit the islands in 86 years. The island has made rapid recovery since Ivan, with most of the infrastructure now restored

The Cayman Islands are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the western Caribbean Sea comprising the islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman.

Sting ray city is off of Grand Cayman.

The Caymans are also famous for their off shore banking arrangements.

Other than that, its a nice place to visit if you're looking for warmth, some beach and some quiet. There's not a lot going on there.

I haven't been in the last few years, but I think they've been pounded pretty good by some of the hurricanes.

Actually, it's a turtle farm, where they raise the turtles for slaughter for their meat and shells. It's pretty morbid.

Sting Ray City is ultra cool, though. The water is perfect and the sting rays are huge, but tame.

The island is one of the cleanest islands in the Caribbean - it's really cool. There isn't a party life there, really, so it's for people who want to dress for dinner and lay out onthe beach.

Nestled in the calm, turquoise waters of the western Caribbean, lies the peaceful British Overseas Territory known as the Cayman Islands. Consisting of three islands just 480 miles south of Miami, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman remain our little piece of paradise.

Blessed with sun-kissed beaches and waters teeming with fish flecked with gold, the Cayman Islands offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world.
