Does anyone know if a pssport is needed to travel to and from Puerto Rico?

I will be taking a trip to Puerto Rico. But I have been getting contradicting answers as to whether or not a passport is needed in order to travel there.

I was told by the airline (US Airline) that I would not need a passport to get there since Puerto Rico is an U.S. Territory. But I would need one to return home. Can anyone help me with this?

No, if you are coming from the US you do not need a passport. Go to the State Department's website. The new rules only apply to Canada, Mexico, and other Caribbean islands that aren't US territories.

B
The people who answered 'no' are correct, and the one that shows you a link to the US goverment site shows you exactly what you are looking for,

If you do decide to come here, you will have a great time. Lots to see and do.

The Puerto Rican tourist bureau says you don't need one if you're a US citizen.

Seems like someone asks this same question at least once a day. So, for the umpteen time, NO, NO, NO! No passport is required to travel between the US mainland and PR. You did not need it last year, you do not need it now and you won't need it next year either.

PR is not "considered" a US territory, it IS a US territory. (By the same token, Puerto Ricans are not "considered" US Citizens, we ARE US citizens.)

So, just like if you were flying from NY to Florida... or any other State... all you need is a driver's license and you are good to go.

PS: Same goes for the US Virgin Island, American Samoa and Guam.

Have fun!

Puerto Rico is a common wealth and therefore a part of The US. You don't need a passport but you do need a picture ID. Your license is good enough. Hope you have fun!!

x_rainbowbritelez_x
No you don't. It's nice to have but PR is a US territory so as long as you have proper US government issued ID you will be OK.

SANDRA Q
No, we (the yahoo answer regulars) have answered this question many times. it seems that the people answering are more confused than those who ask the question.

Enjoy your stay!

Hi, I just went to Puerto Rico from the US in February. You do not have to clear customs on either side (ie - you do not need a passport).

diva
No.. not for Puerto Rico... its considered a U.S commonwealth.. sort of like travelin from Florida to Georgia.. so if you coming from the US you dont need one.. BUT its always good to have one

zelenikaktus
you should take the passport, just in case. it wouldnt hurt bringing it!

It would be a good idea to have one with you, and take some additional identification just in case.
