Does the government of Jamaica condone homophobic murders?

Recent reports from Jamaica are troubling: Individuals who are perceived to be gay are hunted down on the streets and basically lynched or beaten up. Would you consider boycotting Jamaica as a tourist destination? Would you consider writing a not of protest to Jamaican Consulate in New York? (The address is: Consulate General of Jamaica, 767 Third Avenue, New York, NY, 10017)

They don't condone it outrightly but they certainly haven't added anything to the legislature that will prosecute hate crimes more harshly. Generally, we Jamaicans are homophobes of the worst kind. Thank God I was raised differently.

Homosexuality is clearly denounced in Jamaican culture and its also illegal. The reports about hunting them down in the streets and beating them are clearly exaggerated. I live in Jamaica and have never seen that. The government does respect the rights of every individual no matter their sexuality and will not knowingly tolerate any harm towards them.
Boycotting the country will not help, that's our culture and it wont change. We deem homosexuality as wrong and some individuals wont tolerate it at all. Every country has problems like that so then you would have to boycott everyone else as well.
I suggest you check these 'recent reports' again and restrain from speading unecessary propoganda about my country.

Homosexuality in Jamaica is illegal and of course that is apart of our culture as we have more Churches per square mile than any other country,so we grew up No-ing wrong from right that sense
homosexuality though does exist, and so far there are no reports in media, someone has been dragged out of their house in the middle of night or day and abuse by the wider public, people should be free to do what ever they want to in their own Private space, and the Government of Jamaica and the security forces do honor such duties, but please don't put it out into society and say its the norm, when we are the only ones in the animal kingdom doing such things( and please don't say domesticated dogs are doing it too),for me i do not have a problem with someone practicing that. just don't throw it in my face and expect me to participate,I will not!!!!
but most Jamaicans are well thinking and i for one no that such an incident were person were hunted down and lynched are not true,Yes there have been a few incidence like person being beaten up but that after seeing them throw homosexuality actions on to unsuspecting persons. Thank god that am Jamaican,my country has taught me alot, and thats what keeps me sane, for i know like me there are a majority of persons in my country who are not gay beaters, who just tend to mind there own business.
If you think it is bad there try doing it in public in the Middle east, and the wider world, and may you may have to include a few other consulate on that list of address.

Boycott Jamaica as a tourist destination if u want. We dont give a damn. homosexuality, like murder and rape and such things is ILLEGAL in Jamaica!! thats the bottom line. No one is lynching or killed in Jamaica because of it but TAKE HEED and know that if u are going to flaunt ur 'battyman' lifestyle in public, many people WILL NOT take it lightly.

In other words "BUN OUT A CHI CHI"

jamaica is a homophobic society and even if tourist consider to boycott jamaica as a tourist destination that wont change the persons in jamaica from being homophobic. no the jamaican government does not condone homophobic murders.

Lisa M.
Where did you get theses recent reports? What's your source? Because I have been living in Jamaica all my life and I have never witnessed anything, or heard anything of what you are describing. Like everyone else said, we don't condone homosexuality because of our mainly christian culture, but we sure as hell not going to stalk any gay people and kill them. You know, we have our own lives to live. Besides, any murder of a homosexual out here is usually a result of a lover's quarrel- A gay dude killed his lover.

Go protest all you want!

Homosexuality is not condoned in Jamaica. However, murdering is definitely not condoned. I have to ask when a lynching occurred, if it did.
