Know some Canadians (and one specially) that comes over here and spend 6 months. here is basically safe. !!
You can go Puerto plata, Juan dolio, La romana, Bavaro/punta cana, Samana or even the city itself. are relatives safe.

go to santo doming the capital usually the captial has the most tourist also you can try punta cana

I would definitely recommend vacationing in the Dominican Republic. I own a scuba diving travel agency & I have plenty of packages in the Dominican Republic & I recommend it to everyone. It's very safe as long as you stay in the resort areas where you're catered. Make sure right on the beach or walking distance & you'll be jsut find. They want the tourist business so they make sure it's safe. There are quite a few large towns or cities to choose from & they're all very cheap since their dollar is the peso. In fact, it's about the cheapest place to vacation because of the dollar exchange rate. You can check on a website that will convert canadian dollars into pesos. Everybody speaks English & Spanish is the resort areas so you don't have to worry. Also, if you going to exchange your canadian dollars for pesos than make sure you do it at a bank & never do it at the airport. The airports give you the worst rate & the banks give you the best rate. I would also advise you to check into an "all inclusive" package since they will include all your meals & all alcohol beverages for one low price. If you love to eat & drink on vacation then you'll save a bundle at an "all inclusive" the food is excellent. I would recommend a beachfront resort with a swimming pool since they also have quite a few other amenities included. They also have two excellent options which are hotels or renting a condo. This is up to you. If you want to grocery shop & do your own cooking you can save even more & you can buy your own alcohol even cheaper. It's a beautiful place & it's about the cheapest place to vacation in the Carribean, only Cozumel, MX comes close. If you'd like, you can contact me & I'll show you some of my packages. Hi, I am from Germany, but I live here in the DR already over 22 years. Yes it is worth travelling to. It is a most beautiful island. I live in Sosua area. The North Coast I like the best. Lot's to do. Each beach you go to is diferent. The hotels are save. Any tours you do are save,too. So don't worry. Who comes here once usually comes back or Stays, like me.......

puerto plata is really nice, its about 10-20 minutes from the airport, there are resorts, resturants and touresty type things there and really pretty beachers

"Smile" already has given some good advice. Here in Puerto Plata we have a lot of Canadien and Quebec tourist and also a lot who stay here for 3 to 6 months a year.
