Dominican Republic in August, weather and location . . .? |
I went to find out about a holiday to the Dominican Republic in August for my husband, five year old son and I. The travel agent tried to talk me out of it because the weather would be so awful, but I'm not convinced its as bad as she said. Has anyone been in August? If so, what was the weather like when you went?
Is it better to go to the North or the South of the island at that time of year?
Thanks! |

The Dominican republic is in the Caribbean, in august it'll be hot. Never been myself but have friends that have and who have enjoyed it. |

people normally go there in nov/dec/jan - you are wanting to go in huricane season - good luck |

I have been a couple of times in August it was about 90 degrees. Maybe the travel agent is worried about hurricanes - the hurricances only ever seem to hit the south coast so go to the north |

my brother was best man at wedding in august 2007 year and he said the weather was gorgeous, maybe a bit warm miday but find shade or swim etc... the only thing is the locals said it's supposed to be hurricane season mid summer... i've just booked a family holiday for me, my partner and 2yr old son on the 12th this month but was advised to leave our 6wk old at home if poss as it's still supposed to very close. i cant say whether north or south would be best but we're heading north to lupron beach as advised... hope this helps. |

I know this answer because i'm Dominican. The weather will be pretty bad in August but its best if you go to the south but really far away from shore of the island because you dont want floods to reach you. |

The weather is Very hot and you'll get pretty sweaty. August is in the hurricane season, but sometimes there's no hurricane or storms, just try and look at the weather. I went last year 2007 in August and i went to La romana and had to stay in most of the time because it was raining and then i was stuck in a storm and my flight was delayed. But all the other days were fine! |

my friend went in september and she said it was hooot. we went in december and it was 30 degrees celcius constant. think if your 5 year old can handle it, it is hot.
The north is on the atlantic ocean so you dont get crystal clear blue sea and white sane, however you will find that its more family orientated with more to do. south is the carribbean sea with the nice clear waters etc and has a lot of secluded hotels for couples.
i recommend iberostar costa dorada best hotel in the north 5* has a kids club, children entertainment in the day and much more. its all inclusive as it all of the hotels in the dominican republic.
I think august is rainy season, but if you dont mind short sharp heavy rain then go for it. the prices are higher during the summer and tend to drop during november december time. |

I've been to the Caribbean in August. The last two weeks of August is usually the start of the hurricane season so it's best to get there early!
The last week we were there (last week of August) the sea got a bit rough and started chucking up seaweed so there must have been storms somewhere.
The temperature doesn't vary hugely throughout the year, but steer clear of late August onwards cos it'll get a bit blowey! |

Hi!,
First of all do me a favor and tell this "travel agent" that he don't know nothing about the product(s) he is selling.
In august in the Dominican Republic the weather is very good sometimes a bit to hot (26 to 32 degrees Celsius)
Due to the fact this is your first time I would suggest to go to the north coast for different reasons : 1. More to see and to discover 2. The town is only 10 min from your hotel 3. There is always a breeze (better for the kid). 4. Prices are lower, and you have Ocean World (for the kid) Isabella DE Torre (cable car) the first house of C.Columbus, The first church of the Americas and more than enough to do and to see.
Punta Cana is a bit isolated from everything, the town is at 35 miles!. So you have a better idea about your next trip.
Enjoy it and the best for this new year! |

It doesn't matter which side of the island you go to. The weather will be very hot and muggy. I'm wondering if your travel agent was concerned about the possibility of hurricanes.
The resorts all have nice swimming pools, and your room will be air conditioned. |
