Dominican Republic... is worth spending more?

I'm currently looking at the dom rep going on approx 16/17 feb, cant decide on resort or hotel.... has anyone being to iberostar costa dorada or is it worth paying more for secrets excellence or sunscape the beach??? i'm confused... HELP

travelzoo.com is pretty good. i always suggest going there first they have good deals and they give a good base figure of what its going to cost.

The Dominican Republic is a great country with nice people. If you want an ALL INCLUSIVE resort, there are many great ones to choose from. However, if you want to spend time in the city, perhaps one of the Barcelo Hotels can be a good alternative. You will be close to everything, from stores, to tourist attractions, skygliding, etc.

I recommend the beaches in the North, for instance, Sosua and Puerto Plata. But the beaches in Punta Cana and La Romana are good too.

The best way to see the DR and have fun is to stay as far away from all-inclusive resorts as you possibly can. Go to Sosua or Cabarete where there are many nice hotels, just rent the room and go to restaurants/clubs/bars to eat & drink. You will definitley have more fun this way and in the process you will support Dominican small business owners instead of some huge European/American hotel chains that exploit local labor and send the profits out of the country. You will also be able to eat what you want when you want instead of what happens to be served that day.
