Dominican Republic single asian female traveling alone?

Hi, I don't speak any spanish, but I speak english, would it be safe to travel alone in DR? Also, if I want to do lots of sight seeing and water sports and beaches, which part should I stay in? if I book packages from expedia, they are all 7 nights in the same hotel, would that be a better choice? Or staying in different hotels in different parts of DR through out the week? Also, would staying in a 5 star hotel be safer?

Tips anyone?

Thank you very much!!

don't listen to anyone that says don't travel alone. I lived in the DR for many years. I would agree with the people that say the north coast is better Puerto Plata...etc but don't forget to go to Jarabacoa in the mountains or you will miss out. Spanish is not needed in the tourist areas as they are used to tourist and all the place know english there. As far as crime goes...The Dominican Republic is not a violent place especially in the tourist areas as opposed to other spanish speaking countries I have visited. You will not have to worry about people with guns or rapes or things of that nature for the most part. There are places that those things happen( mostly bad areas in the capital) but if you stay to the tourist areas nothing will happen to you. The one thing that you do need to look out for is petty crime such as pick pocketing. Most hotels will have a safe you can use and just make sure you keep you bag closed and in sight at all times and you should be fine. I lived there for various years and never had a problem but heard stories of others getting cameras stolen or bikes stolen. So just use common sense.
As long as you use common sense you'll be just fine.

As far as hotels go. Stay in 3 star or above. I've stayed in some no star hotels there and I felt just fine. Although if it is your first visit there I would stay in 3 star or above.

My only suggestion to you is get to see the whole country as much as possible. I personally loved the north coast but the Jarabacoa in the mountains is priceless.

I'm really jelouse I want to go back and live there. if I could find a job there or start a business I would do it in a heart beat. Have fun and email me if you have any questions. i also have alot of friends there that speak english that can help you if needed

You should be fine going alone. I have traveled alone to many places (including Africa), and never had a problem. As long as you use common sense (like not going alone with a strange guy, and watching your drink), you should be fine. One general travel solo tip that I can give you is that if you are lost or in distress, fellow women tend to be more helpful. I would definitely recommend learning some key phrases in Spanish, but other than that just use common sense and you should be fine.

Also, it's not always the locals you have to watch out for. Foreigners from other countries can be far worse than locals.

I am heading there in March by myself, and I am not worried about anything.

I hope you don't listen to the person that told you not to go alone! Never read such BS here before.

Go to Cabarete which is on the North Coast. Fly into Puerto Plata Airport (POP Airport code) and have a great time with like minded people who go there for the same reasons.

Young crowd of sports minded people who play hard during the day and party hard at night on the beach. You will meet people from all over the world who enjoy the same things you do.

Only difference a higher star hotel will do for you is added comforts! Pick up a book on Spanish phrases and learn a little before you come. Basics will help a bit but you can get along in just English here.

I have lived here for about 8 years and although I live in Sosua which is the next town I have property in Cabarete and go there daily so I have a clue about what I am talking about unlike the other person.

Have a great time and if you need any help or have any questions email me.

Happy Feet
It is safe to travel alone, don't listen to people who don't know what they talking about. This Dominican Republic not Usa, it is safe! So go to the Puerto Plata region, lot to see lot to do!
and the town is only 10 min from any hotel of your choice!
Enjoy it!

Having just traveled to the DR, don't travel alone! Go with someone else. I was going to go thought Expedia but www. Caribbean.com was better. You will be fine if you do not speak any Spanish. All you need to know is gracias(thank you) and hola(hello). You may need to know a bit more, but you will be fine. All hotels usually have a guard beside each hotel. Dont go to a hotel bellow 4 stars. There are usually loud parties. If you want to do lots of sightseeing go to Punta Cana. The Majestic Colonial Punta Cana Resort has FREE WATER SPORTS THAT DO NOT USE A MOTOR! You can go snorkeling for free, kayaking, catamaran, and scuba diving lessons for free! The beaches are really nice thought out of all of the Republic Dominica. Hope this helps!

As long as you stay on the resort or do a group trip you will be fine. One of the last times I was there I met a women who always goes down alone. In my opinion Punta Cana is the best. Have fun, and when ever you are anywhere alone think smart.

El Sombrero Negrow
Having spent a year in the Caribean, I ask you: Please do your self a favor, and do not travel alone..
Travel packs include 6 nights, night 7 is on the airplane.
But when you get there, travel with a group, or bring a friend, I lived in St.Croix, which is American, rape and robbery was still VERY common, so be careful. Have a great time, but at night, treat the whole island like a dark alley.
