went to Punta cana (what ever it was called) yes it's ok,but expensive $10 for 8 tampaz, they told us to stay in the complex & that it was dangerous outside, well we went outside & the people are lovely, they speak Spanish over there,it's very hot & take allot of medication for upset stomach,I spent allot of time on the loo, keep away from the coconut milk.lovely but you'll regret it,loooooooo. the beaches are lovely, horse riding is a must, even if you can't ride they have American sadles, which are nearly impossible to fall out of & cantering along the beach is great, fishing for marlin, waste of money but if you go,don't eat b4 u do,unless your used to boats, you'll go green, the spiders are huge out there,oh & theres sharks in the sea but more people are killed by falling coconuts than sharks,go on the quade bikes they are great,oh & if your washing your cloths while on holiday they never seem to dry because it's so humid,,but yer it's ok there,I would'nt personaly go back but it's an experence & you might love it,Happy holidays |

dominican is very nice, and I found most of the people there to be so so friendly.
Just a few things to keep in mind:
Punta Cana has the best beaches.
Its a hotspot for europeans, so youll hear a lot of french, german, and especially spanish.
Most of it is all inclusive resorts, and its hard to leave the resort and explore.
I highly recommend you know spanish to really get around, and fully enjoy yourself.
The only drawback is you cant drink the water, and you cant give blood for a year after you get back. |

Try here:

(That's www.visiting-the-dominican-republic.com if you need to cut and paste)
We like the North Coast - especially Samana Peninsula, but its more of the sort of place for d-i-y tourists.
If you like all-inclusive then Punta Cana has some luxury hotel complexes -- other South Coast may be e 'bit tired'
The Capital (Santo Domingo...which, incidentally, is what locals also call the Island/Country) is a must to see -- if you are near enough not to sacrifice too much time out of your vacation
The North Coast resorts of Pueryto Plata and Sosua are popular and also have all-incs and other typoes of accommodation
Cabarete a bit further along the coast is THE place for watersports - kiteboarding, surfing and so on - lively younger crowd (don't go if you plan on sleeping at all! ;-D)
Otherwise the website also provides loads of other info about resorts, beaches and everything else - :
Also here is one of several videos on the site giving a quick island tour!:

Hope it helps

Hi Poppet !,
Here some ideas:
1. Places to go : a. Puerto Plata ( the best for real travelers)
b. Punta Cana (only inside the hotels)
c. Boca Chica ( cheap tourist places)
So for example, if you are coming for just the hotel, the pool, some sand and sea,and the bar, then you must go to Punta Cana.(town is 49 km away)
If you wanna discover how the people live, be at 10 min from town, go to Ocean World, discover thousands of things and have a blast with a tremendous night life, go to Puerto Plata.
If you wanna sit on a big beach but with cheap tourist go to Boca Chica ( not much to discover, the capital is at 48 km).
If you need more info about hotels or anything just contact me.
Enjoy it! |

its ok poppett ?
just be a little careful with the food (drink loads of water)
people are cool (but poor)
hotels in general are good (4* minimum req)
beaches are good
weather will be good
not much outside apart from orginized trips
the usual stuff
just chill and you will enjoy it
if in doubt, just get drunk ! |

It's okay. I would honestly choose to go elsewhere. You have to watch what you eat and the food is just okay, you cannot drink any of the water, and you really can't leave the resort.
If you do go, brush up on your Spanish first. I used more Spanish than English while I was there. People are extremely friendly, but service is very slow. |
