Yes there is crime, but like most places the majority of the crime is isolated to a few areas travelers should avoid. I've made 5 trips to Jamaica, staying in Kingston and traveling though Portmore, Spanish Town, and Ocho Rios and the worst crime I know of was a friend who was pickpocketed. Yes, there are quite a few murders and shootings in Kingston, but most of that is isolated in areas tourists should avoid like Duhaney Park, Olympic Gardens, Washington Gardens, Trenchtown, and western Kingston (though I have been to all those places). I've taken the busses quite a few times, too (which the US Embassy says don't do) and it has been fine. In Kingston, stick to Downtown, uptown/New Kingston, Mona, Constant Springs, etc., take a cab after dark, and you will be fine. Just do your research and be careful. Honestly, I feel safer in Kingston than many American cities like Philly, Detroit, and Baltimore, even if I am a "Jake." |

Just like they think New York, California, Israel, Palestine ( get my drift) is full of crime. If you are reckless then anywhere in the world you go you can be vulnerable. Jamaica is a very safe country. If you are staying on a property trust me there is no reason to leave as you will be in paradise |

I've heard both sides. I firens of mine has a house there and she has never complained. I guess everywhere is full of crime depending on who you hear it from. If you are really worried, I'd stick to the more touristy areas and watch your wallet. |

I Live in jamaica and there is crime yes, but there is crime everywhere in the world. Its not like someone is going to see you walking on the street and just shoot you, in broad daylight. The police are doing whatever they can to stop the drug trafficking and gun trade in jamaica, especially in the ghettoes of rema, dunkirk, waterhouse, tivoli gardens, matches lane, grants pen just to name a few. Some of the police are also corrupt there as well, but some are also noble. It depends on where you live you will see the most crime. If you live or pass in the ghetto, beware. (the ones above are in kingston, there is also a ghetto in Montego Bay called flankers)... If you live like uptown, you will not experience any gun shots, or anything like that in the morning. I live in the glorious town of Norbrook, St Andrew, and I dont hear of no crime in my area. Simply put, there is crime in every city, you dont have to be situated where it is. |

when you say everyone you must mean me too ...not...I didn't stay on any resorts and travelled all over the Island and I was no more bothered than I would be anywhere else, you have to be travel smart no matter where you go .The locals treated me great and I fully intend on a return visit...fer sure!!! yes there are areas to be careful of and perhaps not go into at night /alone...but isn;t that true of most places? I know here in my province we have areas of the city where we would never go into at night...or day for that matter..ask the locals they will tell you straight up where to stay away from.......have a great time! Love It!! |

I spent a week there, staying at Sandals in Montego Bay and Dunns' River in Ocho Rios. I didn't see or experience any "crime", but I was offered ganja at each resort, many times, by locals and staff. It got old. |
