For the "away" contingency of the posse? |
I know this will be real hard to narrow down but try to answer. If you had to pick one favorite memory of your childhood in Trinidad, what would it be? |

One of my favourites occurred almost daily in my childhood. My sister and I used to walk from school every day. I went to school in Belmont so I walked from there, picked her up from school in Port of Spain and we walked to our father's office in St. James and waited for him to take us home.
As we walked home, we caught up on all the day's gossip then the books came out.
We walked around the Savannah and into St. James with our noses deep in books, silent except for the occasional ooh and aah. As I was the elder, I shared all of my reading material with my sister. She read all of the books I did for Literature right along with me and I read all of hers. On the way home we discussed the books we read.
The conversation we shared developed a bond that exists to this day. Those memories are the some of the best in my entire life. |

For me that memory would be going to the beach
with my mother. She would cook a nice meal and pack
some frozen juice then it was off we went to the beach.
Her work meant that I only got to spend time with her late
in the evening. Sometimes she would take a day of to spend
with me and have fun at the beach. The water use to feel
so good I LOVED spending time in the ocean, if it was with
my mother better yet. |

yeah i had a lot of fond memories growing up in t'dad, but my favorite would be going to the beach on Sundays. this happened most Sundays up until i was 13, then i moved to ny. my mother would cook Sunday lunch. we would put on our bathing suits, wait for our father to gas up the car, then drive out to Toco, Mayaro, Manzanilla or Maracas Bay. Or sometimes we would go to a beach in Point, not sure of the beach name. the best part was, my sisters, brothers and myself didn't know how to swim, but my father did. so he would take out in the us on his back. it was exciting to see which one of us would go further out than the other w/out crying or being scared. the drive back and forth was long to us, so we made the best of it. talked/laughed w/each other. told funny jokes. it was a lot of fun. |

Gibbsy, i know im not part of the 'away' contingency but, my favourite childhood memory was playing with the other kids in the neighbourhood. there were realllllll boys living in my area, so it would usually be bout 4 girls and 15 boys, so we did boys stuff, football, cricket, scale wire, pelt jep, catch river fish, scootch, racing box carts, riding bike, sailing boats (any thing that floating) in d drain when rain falling, play hide and seek in bull grass (5 feet tall bull grass) - ah remember the cuttail well! lmao. and all of this before ah reach 10 years.
ohhh, and meh cousin running away to go by d neighbour and fall and break out she front teeth. looooooooooooool.
is only as i grew up i realise why my grandmother didnt want us playing with the boys and dem - the girls were ages 6 -9 with me being the oldest at 9, and the boys were ages 8 - 18. buh what i did care bout dem things at 9? we was studying play. lol |

My favourite memory would have to be playing outside on Saturdays. We did chores and were out the door by 9 or 9:30 am and not back until about 6pm. We would ride bikes, climb trees, go into other people's houses and eat, play cards. When we got a bit older the games got a bit riskier. I remember skateboarding behind a car. (I don't know what fool was driving) but it was fun. Everyone left with bruises on the knees and elbows but we all survived. We didn't have to have toys, we made our own fun. As I look back, it's amazing how the day flew by when all you had to play with was your friends and your collective imaginations! |

Sorry, ah still here in Trinidad but ah have to jook in meh mouth.
ONE of my favorite memory was there wasn't any electricity where I lived when I was a child. And every evening my cousins and myself will all go by my grandmother. She used to beat de drum and we, man, we singing and dancing in the dark. Lucky is was dark so no body cyar see who cyar dance. lol.
Then my grandmother told us scary stories about jumbie an ting. It used to be real pressure after when we had to go home in the dark.
Love those days. |

Well, u kno, my memories are fresh in meh mind. It was only about 2 years ago! I Rememeber when i used to play cards with my cousins and meh sister in the night, and we used to be up all night arguing sometimes about who cheatin and ting. We used to always play suck de well. Sometimes we would play monopoly but we didn't know how to play it so hear na, dat game would neva end! Is only meh grandfather that had to come out with his belt in his hand to scare us into our beds. I love when we used to pick guavas, cherries, and my favourite, mangoes, from de trees in the backyard with the rod we had in the back of the fridge. I used to look through every guava to make sure they had no worms. And we used to chase the chickens in the front yard...but it had this one chicken that couldn't get up on the tree in the night...and we felt reaalll sorry for it so big 7 o'clock in the evenin we chasin chicken tuh put up in the tree! and de night we wasn't there to help it get on the tree, a dog came and took it, or so my grandmother said. All kind a bacchanal used to be goin on in Trinidad. ting u wouldn't even care about ova here. There is no one particular memory na. The whole life in general in Trinidad used to be fun. I had my moments, yes, i used to argue and get vex with everbody, but that was all part of it. Sometimes i used to jus want to leave Trinidad cause i was gettin so fed up of it, but is only when i come up here in long island i feel so differently, as if i didn't realize what i had. There was so much more family life in Trinidad. Everybody is family. The whole atmosphere there is nice. i can't wait to experience the feelin again when i go back i reallll missin Trinidad. Forget de crime, and all de negatives, i tired hear about that, probably that is the only good thing about coming ova here, but something had to change, somebody had to make a move. Too much crap does be goin on. But regardless, Trinidad will always be my home, and during the 11 years that i lived in Trinidad, every moment of childhood, good and bad, was one that i would now look back and cherish, and i loved every bit of it. |
