It really depends on two things,
1. Where you are coming back to (which part of Jamaica), especially how safe it is there.
2. Which family you are coming home to and how genuine they are with you.
You talk about coming home to better things for your family, but that concept can be the start of extreme danger if you have family members who are greedy or jealous towards you. You wouldn't be the first person in such an 'advanced' position, to be targeted by a family member. You could even be targeted by their friends if the family members talk too much. This phenomenon isn't unique to Jamaica or even third world countries! Sadly, in some families there is a REASON, why some got ahead and some didn't. Sometimes that reason sows seeds that are WAY beyond our personal ability to control.
Then there is the fact that your family exists in a COMMUNITY. Once people start talking and seeing your money being spent in a certain way or even HEAR of it, there will be those unprogrssive youths who will start to come up with greedy ideas that could leave you 6 feet deep.
From any angle, if ALL the people you plan to 'help' when you get here don't mean you enough good, you could get robbed before you get home from the airport. That sucks.
The point of all of this, is that it REALLY depends on the character of those who will be immediately around you when moving back to Jamaica.
The other thing to seriously consider is whether you HAVE enough money to do everything you want to do (including help people). Its easy to underestimate the cost of that. Do you have enough money or passive income (from OVERSEAS investments that you dont have to cash etc) to do the following,
1. Support your immediate family without compromising your other goals?
2. FULLY finance the businesses that will supposedly change your extended families life? I mean having less than 18 months worth of capital in this type of situation is a PLAN TO FAIL. This business will have salaries to pay from day ONE.... even when its earning ZERO.
3. Accomodate emergencies or unforseen developments, both on the family side and on the business side?
Think on these things! And always remember to make sure you are NOT compromising your core finances. Its good to help people out, but MOST people end up needing three more rounds of financial help before breaking through (if they EVER do), so assume that you need to remain sturdy to achieve the desired long-term effect. |

I am in the very same position as yourself and share your concerns. I really don't know what to expect but would recommend that you check out this blog. It's written by a couple who returned home to Jamaica and started a business too. They also have an ebook to help you with the process of moving back. They are usually good at responding to emails. Check them out and good luck.

Depends on where you'll be relocating to. Obviously the southside is more dangerous..Kingston, Spanish Town, ever Portmore getting bad...but I've known ppl in other parish to get shot down for their cash or jewelry that was running a fruit stand or bar !
They the way you "roll" will have alot to do with safety. Don't get a nice expensive car and wear the latest fashion & jewelry unless you can afford personal security. Don't trust too much...the people you think are your friends are sometimes hatching ideas to empty your pockets. Use common sence in where you go & what your doing at all times...people will be watching you even when your not watching yourself ! Don't brag on yourself and what you have, and don't invest foolishly.
Watch those family members too. You'll hear ALL kinds of stories on how you can help them out, but keep in mind if you were NOT there, they would make it somehow regardless !
Also if you ever decide to get a gun permit, DO NOT TELL NO ONE. Many a citizen & police officer get killed for their gun alone, nothing else ! And ignore any passa passa you hear in your scheme. Sometime dem talk to hear from YOU the truth. |

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
PLEASE take my advice
I am born and raised in Jamaica
And i want to leave as soon as possible
Lately, if you didn't know, there have been some abductions of children FROM school and restaurants like Burger King (in the bathroom stalls) they abduct the children (both boys and girls) rape them and possibly chop off their heads and dump the bodies. I haven't been to the movies for months and I'm a BIG Twilight fan and i cant go because of my fears of being abducted.
People in Jamaica are getting crazy now, all the driving accidents (horrible) the taxi drivers are absolutely HORRIBLE.
The murder rate is high in Jamaica. It is one of the top 10 most dangerous place to live.
Oh and jobs. Its very hard to do business in Jamaica. unless you are financially equipped and can buy a big lot for yourself, a small shop in the corner is not going to do it.
Jamaica is in some serious times right now. |

Jamaica is safer than Iraq,Indian and Pakistan and other countries with constant terrorism, but on that note i would like to say it's pretty challenging to do business in some areas, because of the violence. My answer to your question is to research the areas your going into as the crime rate you hear about is most times not reflective of the whole country,as i lived in Kingston for years and never heard a gun shot until i moved to the US. |

I wanna go to Jamaica also to stay but not right now. Lucky you ! I mean seriously Iraq, Iran and alot of other countries are wayyyyy more dangerous than Jamaica but since your a Foreigner watch yourself because some Jamaicans ( who've never left Jamaica ) in Jamaica seem to think all Foreigners are rich and pick up money just like that so some guys may wanna rob you so don't flaunt anything you have , I'm not saying you can't wear it but don't flaunt it or show off.
Questions to ask yourself, Do you have enough money to invest in the business you want ? If you have alot then you'll be fine but if not keep working because money is very important in Jamaica to get whatever you want started I know because my family has started businesses in Jamaica like supermarkets, trucking companies, game shop..etc so I'm secure when I go there.
The most important thing , make sure to invest in something that would make money. Don't just do anything.
