Just go with a organized group trip. Its very safe as long as you follow some simple rules. Which I'm sure will we told to you when you go out. Never reach into any hole or anything you can't see into. Lots of fish, eel and other creatures of the deep hide in them. Never touch the coral, some types of coral can give you a nasty sting. Make sure you don't stand on anything without checking it out first. Rays bury themselves in the sand and usually can't been seen. Also use some good sunblock on your back. You don't realize you are burning because you are in the water. Don't be worried about sharks or anything. The DR is very over fished and the coral depending on where you go, is pretty dead. Not the best place for scuba/snorkelling. But still worth it. Have fun |

Don't wear any jewellery in the water if there are baracuda about, as the shine can attract them and people are said to have lost fingers that way. One well known way to attract fish is to squirt soft cheese into the water -- but there again, beware of the metallic container getting them too excited! |

No - Just make sure you go on an organised exertion. And if you go it alone - just make sure that someone knows you have gone |

Don´t believe all the stories from people. In the Dominican Republic you can go snorkeling without any problem if you stay near the beaches. If you go on expeditions don´t go alone! because your aren´t a experienced diver so be care full!!!!!
Even divers don´t dive alone. There are some beautiful spots to snorkel like Sosua bay, Luperon bay, Punta Rucia
(one of the most beautiful on the north coast). For Punta Cana this is more dangerous because of the sharks coming from the Canal de la Mona (between Dominican en Puerto Rico). Anyway enjoy it! |

I have gone snorkeling many times there and never had a problem. Like anything, you need to be wise and safe. |

Avoid jellyfish, if you get stung urine or vinegar will make it stop stinging within minutes. Make a habit of never touching anything in the water and you won't hurt anything or do any damage and it will stay pristine. The only time I would worry about sharks is if I'm in cloudy water and they can't see me clearly. Barracuda might follow you around but don't get excited. Just stay calm and enjoy the beauty. And remember about rip tides, swim parallel to the beach to get out of them. |

The triggerfish sometimes attack you on the fins and in the crotch - but they are mostly in all-inclusive resorts. If you go to an all-inclusive, you really have to be careful - they are dangerous. |
