Going to PR but having some doubts....?

I'm heading to puerto rico in a few weeks to see the wildlife there (I'm a major animal lover and photographer), I am told about some weasel-like animal (kills snakes) that the whole population is rabid (and that I shouldn't go anywhere NEAR them). Should I avoid the animals/cancel going there? i don't want to risk my health, i really want to get close to these weasel animals but im having doubts.

Is it possible for approacing a healthy-looking animal?
Is there a significant risk of these animals?
Any information on them?

Nice detailed awnsers please.

Yes this animal is the mongoose & they do carry rabies. You wont see them much though, maybe in the rain forest you might. Just dont go anywhere near them & you will be ok. In el Yunque rain forest there are alot of cool species for you to see, but no really dangerous or poisonous animals, just this bad mongoose which is a rodent. In the rain forest there are poison plants to watch out for. In the rain forest you will find lots of species of coqui frogs, the endagerred puerto rican parrot, puerto rican tody, hummingbirds, snakes like the puerto rican boa, iguanas, geckos & more. There is also a dry forest in the south called Guanica where you can find different types of species of animals & Cactus. I would also reccomend places like Guavete forest & toro negr0 forest. Also the central mountain region like Utuado & Jayuya will have some nice wildlife for you. Camuy Caves are big & interesting also & Vieques island has wild roaming horses. Cieba trees, Flamboyan trees & Flor de Maga(hibiscus) are all over the place. You might even want to look into Mona Island tours or las Cabesas de San Juan. Enjoy :)

If you want to see wild animals u should go to El Capitolio i Old San Juan..u'll see plenty of them but they probably have rabies too.

if you want good photography go to el yunque, cavernas del rio camuy in Camuy, PR or Old San Juan.

the capitol area is the best area in puerto rico to see wild animals. my other choice would be vieques and culebra.

The little weasel is called a mongoose. They are all over the islands, although there aren't as many of them here as some other places in the Caribbean. I live here in PR, for the better part of a decade, and have only seen them scurry across the road on occasion. I am an avid hiker, and frequently am out in the middle of no where here, and really there isn't much wildlife to speak of. As far as rabies goes, yes pr has rabies but a problem to the extent which you described, no way. If you want a vacation that involves wildlife, pr is not your place. We have the mongoose, rats, an assortment of yet identified rodents, snakes, alligators (no lie, they are a product of the baby alligator pet craze some years back) and monkeys. The monkeys are Rhesus, they were turned loose on an island off our coast some 50 years ago from a research lab. They have since populated much of the east coast of pr, and are not so friendly. Why don't you try a trip to the Galapagos Islands, that will give you great contact with animals. I mean don't get me wrong I love PR, and think it is truly beautiful. Great for sight seeing, the mountains are fantastic, beach going, snorkeling, hiking, fishing, great food, and gambling are a few among it's many offerings. But wildlife, no, not one of it's many charms.

see_ya
yes. this is true.
these animals have rabies, but you can go to places like el yunque and get information as well as film the animals up close with the zoom technique of a camera. Its not safe to get close to any animal that has rabies. There is also other animals of interests like bats, snakes, exotic birds, lizards, monkeys, coqui's. The only things you wouldnt find around is big wild cats, elephants and the mainly the big animals you find in Africa. You would only be able to see these in a zoo. Their is a zoo in Mayaguez, even thought is sad to see them locked up, its the closest thing you can see as wild animals.
