Its a great place & cheap when you get there too.
The only tip I'd give you is to see all you can when you get there. The dominican republic is a fantastic place and you'll have a great time. Do you're revision before hand and find out whats an offer in the area you're staying - do some excursions + have a lovely time!
Some tips:
- Remember there is a charge entering and leaving the country. I think it is 10 US dollars to enter (it can only be paid in dollars too) and 20 US dollars to leave. Im not sure if thats the exact price though, so check before you go.
- Sun cream, shampoos, insect repellent and so on is expensive in DR so take it with you. Leave it to the maids when you leave (if you don't use it all) they will be so greatful.
- If you get hassled by people selling things when walking round shops. Firmly say no and keep walking, they will leave you alone.
- Hotel shops charge 3 x the price of a supermarket in town. If you need anything get a taxi/bus to a local supermarket to cut the costs! Or ask a member of staff in your hotel complex to pick it up for you (give them the money n a small tip) they'll be more than happy to do this.
- Try and book excursions with people selling them in your hotel lobby area. It'll work out alot cheaper + it will work out fine. Travel companies such as airtours charge double the normal price.
- Getting a bus to places instead of taxis is PERFECTLY safe. We were the only people that did this in our hotel complex and yet saved lots of money. For a taxi into Puerto Plata town that usually cost $25 we paid about $4 on the bus.
Hotel reception staff will be happy to tell you where the bus stops are and if you do get abit lost, tell the bus driver where to drop you off and he will. (He will even drop you off outside you're complex for a small tip).
These are the only few tips I can think of. Email me if you have any particular questions answering and i'll be more than happy to help.
Have a great time + just to let you know..the weather in march will be FANTASTIC. I was there march 2008 and had a truely fabulous time, it didnt rain once during the day. Only in the evenings for 5 minutes whilst we were sleeping!!!
Expect a great suntan!! |

I have been to the Caribbean a few times, value for money, the people, the weather, it can`t be beat. I shall be returning to Cuba next year, just back, it was paradise. I`m sure you will enjoy the Dom Rep, make sure you have all the vaccinations and malaria tablets you need. It is good to carry a hand gel for cleaning hands when out on trips etc, sure the reason most people are effected with stomach upsets is due to personal hygiene. Book trips from the local tourist places, these are usually on the beach where you stay, look like a run down shack but they are a lot cheaper, they look after you very well and we seemed to have a better time than the thomas cook reps trips.
Take lot`s of Deet to repel the mossy`s.
Have a fantastic time! |

I know nothing about hotel excellence, but I have been to the island 6 times to various locations.
Bring 10 US dollars per person to pay for your tourist card in the airport.
Exchange your money at the airport when you get there and re-exchange it back at the airport before you leave. check the exchange rate, its roughly 33 pesos to 1 us dollar usually, sometimes up or down/ Do the math in your head because you not not get enough back. do NOT go to any of the Banco Reserva type places on the street in rural areas, go to official Western Union type places if you need more money later. keep all of your exchange receipts, they will only turn back into US dollars up to a certain amount
keep your money safe in tourist pouch or pocket.
Do not wear a lot of flashy jewelry. If you are downtown people will try to wash your car for money, children will want to shine your shoes or just in general ask for money for food. Your call on if you want to give it.
the Dominican is very hot and humid most of the time, March will be pretty hot. Wear sunscreen and wear lightweight clothing. Bring bugspray if you plan on being outside at night or going to Ebano Verde rainforest or El Limon Waterfall. locals wear t shirts dresses jeans and are very Americanized in urban areas
If you want to eat more than the basic hotel food, like try some Arepa, Sugarcane, Maharate, etc. get a typhoid vaccine before you go. Hep A and B are also recommended.
The people are fun. the men like their women and take an interest in blonde Americans too.
Enjoy the culture - dance to their music, eat their food, etc.
drink Presidente, La Bohemia and Cidra.
if you go to downtown santo Domingo, shop on the calle el conde and walk along the Malecon. visit the Old City where Columbus landed - women cannot wear shorst in the Cathedral here but they often let you borrow a wrap to go inside. eat at Brasileno Cafe or Museo del Jamon, eat at El Conuco and watch the dancers, dance at La Fortuna or la Guacara Taina
visit Altos de Chavon in La Romana,
if people ask dont say you are Americans, they are Americans too as are everyone on the western hemisphere, say United States or Estados Unidos.
try and learn some basic Spanish, it will go a long way,
If you have any other questions or additional questions about anything I have said feel free to email
its a beautiful country, enjoy and try to see more than just the hotel and the beach!

one thing i would say is only take us dollars to get into the country and out. when you get there i would change english money into pasto's. (dominican currency)
also i would take all the toiletres you need as its very expensive.
and another thing is be careful if you leave the complex.
hope this helps.
email me if you have anymore questions |

read the reviews on this hotel....
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ put the name in the search box. they take american currency. no need to switch over unless u want to. take a lot of 5's & 10's put in different locations of pocket. some will automatically think that you are rich because u r american or european. if the price sounds too high, don't try to brow beat them with a lower price, just say that you want to check prices at the different stores and usually they will give u a better deal. don't go to stores on the site, catch a bus or cab like other readers said. stores on site are a rip off. go to the dollar store at home like dollar tree or dollar general and stock up on any med that u can think of such as head ache, cramps, bengay for pain, bandaids, etc. for that just in case something minor happens to you. :-) check out these websites below. mandatory for military and govt personnel; highly recommended for civilians. i am assuming that u r american. if from elsewhere check out sites similar to ours. have fun
http://www.travel.state.gov/ look under international travel for us citizens. then click on registration with embassies. check out whatever else may interest you on that page especially Emergency assistance to americans abroad and Tips for traveling abroad . also go to http://www.domrep.org/ once there go to embassy. under embassy click on embassy staff. print that page and put it in a safe place. also do the same thing for the consular section click on consular staff and print & put in safe place for that just in case of an emergency.again, the site above is not mandatory to sign in but highly recommended in case something happens. |
