You can definitely take Sterling with you to Cuba, we were there in April this year, we stayed at Cayo Coco and our hotel like most of the ones their had a little bank were you changed your sterling for Cuban Pesos and you don't get ripped off either, our hotel also accepted MasterCard and Visa card too, we didn't spend a fortune either as everything is so cheap there, the people are fantastic in Cuba and will do anything for you, have a brilliant time and enjoy every minuet cause I am sure like me you will wish you were back there as soon as you get home, its amazing. |

Dollars. There may have been places that accepted Euros but I never saw them when there.
Ever been to the Third World? Get ready......
Cuba has become one big genetics experiment.
Everyone with any brains, ambition or dignity gets out. What's left is the cesspool of that society. It's very sad. |

Those who are saying 'dollars' are a little out of date. I had this same quandary last year so I phoned the embassy and they were quite clear about it; dollars aren't welcome but they could be used for a fee. It was 10% but now I'm hearing that it is 20%.
The currency for the tourist is the CUC convertible peso which is pegged to the USD (they have a sense of humour) it isn't a traded currency so you have to buy it locally, but the euro is accepted in Varadero (which is closed to most Cubans) and Holguin. I fell for the bank's line and bought some euros but found that they were happy with GBP as well.
Last year's prices:
Lobster 25 pesos
Mojito at La Bodeguita 4 pesos
Daiquiri at La Floridita 6 pesos
Tourist card to get in £25
Exit tax 25 pesos |

Cuba uses a cuban peso. Since the usa is banned from traveling to cuba, not sure they have as many places that do USD to cuban pesos. Might want to see if you can exchange it before you go or call your hotel. |

I was in Varadero in the summer of 2000, and there wasn't a whole lot going on there, and was more just a tourist haven, not much Cuban culture, BUT, there is a local artists square with very cool woodworking and necklaces, etc. Also, there are a few reallly good cheap restaurants, one right on the street selling kinda like rotisserie style chicken, you can't miss it. Buy a bottle of that Havana club rum- 7 years, it's like 8 bucks, and great.
Bring me a bottle back please, mail it to me in Dallas. |
