HELLP PLEASE!!!!! Cancun or Grand Cayman...HELP?

For my mothers 50th birthday my dad and I are going to suprise her with a vacation to somewhere in reason. Well, my mom will know about the place but not the events we are going to do.

Im 13 and my dad is 53. So it would only be us three. Where would be a better place for vacay cancun or the grand cayman islands? Any other suggestions? We reside in Manhatten so nothing too far away.

These are some commen interests of ours:

Beaches, clear beaches lol not the Atlantic ocean
Culture is what i like mostly, like ruins and natural sights
Shopping is my moms special thing
Activites like, which one has more stuff to do bc we would be there for 7 to 10 days.
And what adventure activties could i do in _____ (your choice: cancun or grand cayman)

What i mean by that is like snorkeling, underground caves, horseback riding on the ocean., parasailing, etc.

Well thanks for your help!!

Grand Cayman has some gorgeous beaches with clear water and amazing snorkeling, also has horseback riding, parasailing, stingray city, turtle farm, botanical gradens, shopping, etc. BUT is pretty expensive.

Cancun has nice beaches, and is a lot cheaper for shopping and restaurants and things. It also will have more ruins. I would imagine there is probably horseback riding, parasailing, etc. there, too, but I have not been there so I don't know :)

I'd choose Cayman in a heartbeat [and I'm about the age of your mother]. The shopping there isn't cheap, nor are the restaurants. The beaches are beautiful [especially Rum Point, although it is the most-remote part of Cayman].

Try going to TripAdvisor.com - they have forums there. Also try googling "Grand Cayman" - there are lots of sites for GC.
If you do go to GC, you have to swim with the stingrays - it's totally awesome! [Easy to find info about this - it's probably the #1 thing to do there.]

Never been to Cancun, but have been to Cozumel [across the channel from Cancun] and liked that. From Cancun, you could rent a car/take a tour to cenotes, the ruins at Tulum, etc.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you and your family have a great, relaxing time - I'm sure your mom will love it.

Grand Cayman. Its a peaceful and beautiful island. Why take a chance and and go to Cancun, Mexico where you may become sick from the water. Some people do, and you definitely don't want that!
Just make sure the hotel you choose Has what you want. Better, use a Travel agent.

Grand Cayman has some really beautiful beaches and visiting with the Stingrays in Stingray City is really fabulous. GC is really expensive.

The two climates are very similar.

I would actually suggest flying into Cancun and staying down at Playa del Carmen. There is so much to do and see culturally speaking. The underwater cenotes are beautiful and you can take a tour of a cenote and snorkel in an underwater cave. There is also a fabulous theme type park called Xcaret. This is a perfect blend of culture, sea life and fun. You can see the Mayan ruins too. There is also a great beach and you can have a few days of relaxation. We stayed at Viva Wyndham Maya and the Riu Palace. Both were really nice. That is my suggestion.
