Don't know. Those who tried were devoured by sharks

It's 90 miles away at the closest point, so it's not likely that anyone would make it just by swimming. Not only would it be physically exhausting, you'd also be dealing with rough waters as well as sharks.

My husband tried escaping twice that way, unsuccessfully-- once in a raft, and once in an inner tube. The first time, the winds pushed the raft back. The second time, the inner tube popped 7 miles into the ocean and he had to swim back. He said 7 miles was not an easy thing to do. Oh, and he had sharks swimming around his raft the first time out.

His third time was the lucky one, though :)

Have you ever actually SEEN an OCEAN? The Florida Straight runs between Cuba and Florida.. THAT IS DEEP WATER.. even in the summer, the water temp. is 90 degrees or less. A swimmer would take several DAYS to make that crossing.. and would die from hypothermia LONG before they got half way across.. and THAT WATER IS ROUGH... It's not like your swimming across the local lake in your home town. The waves can run 2 to 3 FEET on a CALM DAY and 10 to 15 FEET or MORE in stormy weather.

Cuba at it's closest point is about 90 miles from Key West Florida. I do not think anyone has swam the distance with the intention of swimming the whole way. But lots have made it to Florida on inner tube rafts and other unbelievable rafts.
