Froogies

Has anyone been to Cuba in August? Is it safe even though it is hurricane season?

Additional Details
I know it is a Communist country. I was enquiring about safety regarding the likelihood of a hurricane, not politically.

Yes I have and didn't have any problems. However, given that August is in hurricane season it is a risk you take. When I'd been in August there actually had been a storm brewing overhead but passed over Cuba and nothing happened.
But this year Cuba took a serious beating which is not usual. The odds are that you wouldn't have any problems with serious hurricanes even during the season. Cuba is very well prepared for hurricanes and take high measures to protect their citizens and visitors.

Friends of mine work at resorts and all the tourists were protected. If some had to be moved to other hotels with more secure surroundings, they were moved. Everyone was together and were kept in secure places and were taken care of.

So if you're booked for a trip to Cuba in August, you should be fine. Even though it's also considered to be the rainy season, you won't end up with that much either. It may rain during the day for a few as a tropical shower, cool things down and nothing is interrupted. The rains will usually come from anywhere between 6-9 p.m and is not constant. Dries up quickly...the rain is mostly in the middle of the night when you're sleeping and you wake up to beautiful sunshine.

Its not guaranteed to be safe. It is more likely for hurricanes, but it doesn't mean there is definitely going to be one. You may be lucky and get away with just a tropical storm or two. They are fine, over in 5 minutes and lovely clear weather after them.

Cuba is on the fore front of looking after both tourists and residents alike in the event of a hurricane. Should one occur I would rather be in Cuba than most anywhere else in the Caribbean. Check the site below it has an almanac for past years.

Yes - I live in Cuba.

Remember that even in a bad season (like last year's) only a very few days are affected by hurricanes. (Say 9 days in 150 - so about 6%). So the chances of your visit being affected are quite small.

Further, Cuba is probably the safest place in the Caribbean to be during a hurricane because the authorities are well organised and evacuate everyone to safety if there is a strong risk.

But yes, there is a still a risk that your holiday visit would be affected by a hurricane.

No, it is not safe. It still a comunist dictatorship

And they give me thumbs down. Some people really cannot tolerate the truth. Typical of the comunists

We were there during this years hurricane season and I was amazed at the calm and efficient organisation of the Hotel staff. No one ever felt unsafe, at least not outwardly and the staff made sure you were kept busy and entertained . I love the country to start with but this trip made me really appreciate the indomitable spirit of the Cuban people.

Our resort was slightly hit tree and small building damage. Buty as soon as it cleared it was business as usual or almost we did not swim much after the hurricane went through.

The odds of you being in a hurricane are excedingly small you can also pick a resort in a part of the island that is less likely to be hit. Like say on the south west coast Cayo Santa maria comes to mind. And it is a beautiful place with great diving and snorkelling.

Dont worry about it if you never roll the dice you will never win
