Has anyone been to haiti???

I'm going to haiti in Oct, but I dont want to stay in Port Au Prince for the whole time. I have been searching some vacation site and I hear the Cap-Haitien is a really nice place to go outside of the capital. How wouls someone get from Port Au Prince to Cap-Haitien and are there any nice hotels there. I also would like to go to san domingo, is it easy to get there from Port Au Prince??
Additional Details
I am haitian and my older brother lives there, so I am not really worried about it being dangerous because my family live in a nice area; I just want to see the another side of the counrty.

I've been to Haiti.
It's really easy and cheap to fly from Port au Prince to Cap Hatien... 30 mins if I remember correctly. Though I did stay in Labadee, not in Cap...

again an easy 15 min flight to Jacmel was great. Lots of hotels there and it had the best paved road in the entire country (that I saw) Though if your bros are in Haiti, then you should drive from Pap and stop at Bassain bleu... water falls (I didn't see them, wasn't safe, & no opportunity)

It's going to rain everyday in October ~usually does anyway from 3is to 5pm downpour... watch out if you do drive to Jacmel, the rivers will be up, and bridges out.

I took a bus (coach) from Petion-Ville to Santo Domingo. It was great, and easy. 8 hours, very air conditioned, lovely scenery and 2 Spanish movies. I think the cost was like 75 or 100 dollars, that was two years ago.

Oh, if you want to go to a beach in Haiti, much more laid back than the DR, I suggest going to the Ile de Vache... yeah, Isle of cows...

In fact here is a travel agent in Haiti! If you do have her fly you somewhere, remind her to book your return... but she does have fantastic tour ideas and knows loads of people.
Jacqualine Lebrom her e-mail:

she's from England, but is fluent in Creole (I took lessons from her) .
bon voyage!

I lived in Port Au Prince for a while and one weekend we drove down to Jacmel! it is a beautiful town. We spent an entire weekend on the beach for 50 dollars american including 2 meals! The best weekend of my life. There are charter flights that fly from Port Au Prince to Cap Haitian if you want to go there. I am moving to Limbe, Haiti after I finish my schooling! Petionville is nice as well..go to the lookout in Petionville you get the entire view of port Au Prince as well its so gorgeous! People will probably be telling you not to go and that it is way to dangerous, its true the political climate is not good at all, you just need to be careful and travel with people who know the language and the area. Dont be out on the streets at night at all and its best to travel in the mornings(its not as hot too). OK well hope that helps I hope that you have an amazing time:)

Head to Jeremie or Petionville very Beutiful places and they have a relaxed calm feel to it. Oh and Cap-Haitien is not such a bad place either its really a beytiful place just dont head to Cite-Soleil.

Haven't been to those stops, we were in Labadee. All I can tell you is that its is HOT and humid there so dress accordingly.

I would not go there no matter what! I know that you are Haitian and I surely appreciate that but it is not safe or fit for tourists period. Some of the cruise ships stop at Laberdee but it is an artificial environment and not reflective of the conditions in Haiti. Sorry I just cannot recommend a trip there at this time.

Santa Domingo is an entirely different story and world's apart from Port Au Prince. I would highly recommend The Dominican Republic. Perhaps your family should come visit you there.

As far as transportation out of Port Au Prince, your Brother would most likely be able to direct you accordingly. Car rentals are not recommended period. If you must then here is a link to find out conditions and costs:

Good luck and please I mean not to insult or criticize where you are from it is just the present conditions are not conducive for tourism as we know it. The other side of the Island, Dominican Republic is perfectly safe.

Wishing you a Bon Voyage!

First my dear it is not safe to go to Haiti, and if you must be there be very cautious!!!!! They are not that kind with tourists!
Don´t forget this is the poorest country in the world!
Even your stay at the capital can bring you in problems, so if add the madness to travel (with what?) to Cap Haitien, this is completely crazy! (sorry but whe are speaking about your security). If you wanna travel to the Hispañola island just go to Puerto Plata (north coast) big beaches, a lot to see/discover!
and from there take a tour/excursion to Haiti and to Santo Domingo. I´m a tour operator and knowing what i´m talking about! For any questions or help, bookings just contact me!
Good luck! and greetings
Gilbert
