Has anyone ever lived in or visited Cuba? What is it like? |
From what i saw on a Barbara Walters special awhile back, it seemed like the majority of the population in Cuba were generally doing well. I know nothing about Cuba (other than the U.S. embargo) and wanted to know what it is like living there. Before watching the show I thought it was a harsh place to live. |

Most Cubans doing well? well from where i am i don't see that at all, most Cubans live in poverty, with the average wage of 15 peso a month equivalent to 15 dollars. What they show you on T.V are cities like Havana where there is a lot of business, Cubans living there are probably doing better than the rest of Cuba. even then you have dictatorship, no freedom of speech, no food,
The embargo on Cuba is about money only, and we are talking Billions, if it was trade then why can we walk into shops and hotels and purchase, products packaged and distributed in the United States.
As for the medical system, what a joke, you have to take your own bedding towels cotton wool and any other supply one might need to stay in hospital. If it was that good then why does Fidel not use a Cuban doctor?
They have lived for 50 years under communism and so they do not have any understanding regarding the rest of the world and economy,
The Cuban people work for the government, they own nothing.
No internet access so they are unable to open their eyes to the rest of the world.
But aside all that they are happy people but do not be fooled many of them would like to leave if they could many are quite happy to stay, they love their country whether they still live in Cuba or have left, and i am sure that if things ever changed all the Cuban people who left will return,
From a geological side it is a beautiful, country, and one of the safest you would travel around .
i am sure many Cuban people who no longer live here will add their own comments.
I have full admiration and understanding for these people who constantly stand by their country, as i live in Cuba among the Cuban people and live life as the Cuban people do. It is not easy and conditions are hard.
Additional info
why do people give thumbs down when you tell them the truth about how Cuba is, do people not want to hear the truth and only the glamorous side, such as hotels and beaches.
well, well, well ,welcome to reality.
I am now going to leave commenting on Cuba i shall leave it to the people who you would prefer to listen to, the ones who think they know everything.
There are two people who live in Cuba at present who post on here regularly, that is Beardo and myself, although Beardo lives in Havana and i live in the country we live two totally separate life styles in Cuba. we are the ones who actually know what is going on here in Cuba. But even then you choose not to listen to either of us,
I am in constant contact with a few Cuban people now living in Miami, i shall keep my information down to those people alone.
Happy reading , keep on being disillusioned.
Adios mi amigos
one final thing before this ends. take a look at what is happening in Africa now those people are living in fear and they are not under dictatorship, I think i know where i would rather be living right now,Yes Cuba has its bad side but it also has it's good side |

Right. That explain why we risk our lives on home made rafts trying to escape from there
I suppose they will say that we do that out of pure happiness. I never thought that after 50 years somebody would ask if the sun sets everyday
I never thought that Barbara would play for fidel
Note:
And all the other Moes forgot to mention the surveillance, the repression, the fear.
We are talking about a comunist country, where the State controls EVERYTHING !
Do you hear ? Everything !
It is really ironic, cruel, sarcastic, and incredible that foreigners spread comunist propaganda here, trying to convince everyone that Cuba is a paradise.
Only explanation is that they are comunists themselves and received the assignment of spreading the propaganda to fool people
Ha, besides the praises to comunism, they present us like a tribe of primitive savages who spend their time singing, dancing, and laughing
Come to Miami, calle ocho for a more complete and ACCURATE explanation
The Moes want to give the idea that just by setting foot on Cuba, they know more than the Cubans who were BORN THERE, LIVED THERE for many years and ESCAPED FROM THERE |

You should come to miami, la calle ocho and we would be glad to give you a complete explanation about your question
Why you think there are more than a million cubans desperately trying to escape ?
And ( incredibly ) there is a handful of comunists spreading comunist propaganda to make people believe that fidel is the savior of the universe, like flash gordon
Pathetic ! |

It is a harsh place to live in. I have family still living there. You don't have freedom of speech. My family lives in a day to day basis, working everyday to eat. My grandpa has to work to get some little money to buy food for him and my grandma because his retirement is not even close to what they need. He has to walk many miles every day and he is 65. My uncle has to do whatever he can to live close to ok. He has to do things that if the police finds him he could go to jail.
I haven't seen that program, but I can tell you that we don't live well there. We are not ok. |

Harsh does not begin to describe it
Oh, joe, "the answers given by the armchair Cubans are all one side propaganda and do not have the guts to tell the truth "
Impressive. I assume, then, that you know that by your psychic abilities or do you have pictures of us in the armchair ?
And who is stopping us from telling the truth ? You ?
Since we escape from Cuba, we are not afraid anymore.
"The fat *** armchair quarterbacks living in luxury in Miami, who love to pretend they are "fighting for Cuba"
As I said before, have you seen any of us living in luxury in Miami, fat armchair quarterbacks ? Do you have pictures of us in the armchair ?
I have the feeling that, if you are not a psychic that received that image in a vision, then, all that you say here is the result of the thoughts that you expelled last night sitting on the toilet
I assume, then, that you are the real brave, courageous fighter that has bravely fought by the independence of Cuba
I see that you are expert in the use of that deadly weapon: the mouth. You really know how to use it
Since, by your own confession, you have gone to Cuba many times to give fidel your money to help him to fight the fat *** armchair quarterbacks from Miami, you should go to Cuba definitively to help fidel to build comunism
You could then wear green clothes, participate in military actions like your heart so vehemently desires and fidel will reward you by allowing to clean his toilet.
Perhaps in fidel's toilet you will expell more thoughts like the ones you present here |

(I stayed out of this so as not to get caught too much in the cross-fire, but I ought to say something. And then only ~ 1/3 of my reply appeared !)
Cuba is very much a land of contrasts. A communist country that dances to a salsa beat.
Clearly there is a lack of free speech - but for most Cubans, I don't think that affects their daily lives much. They go to school, to work, much the same as people in other countries. I am sure that most of the Cubans who try to leave do so to improve themselves economically, not politically. (Note that Cubans don't try to escape to "democratic" Haiti, or even Jamaica.)
"Doing well" - compared to what ? They are doing better economically than 15 years ago, but probably worse than 25 years ago. Better than many of the surrounding countries, and probably better than parts of the US, but certainly worse than the US in general. |

Cuba is a beautiful place.. i have been there twice and am hoping to again soon. It is quite poor in some places but the people are very happy, laid back and kind people. When i went to Holguin in Cuba me and my family went to a traditional cuban beach on a saturday... all the cubans were all happily dancing aroung on the beach without a care in the world eating hog roast, i thought thi was amazing. Cuba has lovely hot weather with beautiful exoctic animals and beaches and i am pleased to say i saw hardly any insects all i saw was tiny lizards which were so pretty. Cuba is a great country to be... i suggest you visit Cuba for a holiday before you make any plans to live there. I am 100% sure that you will love it there. Cubans are lovely people and love kids!!! xxxx Have a great time. xxxx |

Visited cuba four times. Just got back from varadero on thursday. They seem happy and they do have a good health care system for a third world country. Cuba is safe for tourists. Unlike mexico or haiti. When my friend was down there she broke her wrist and everybody helped her from the second she fell. People gathered to help her, called for an ambulance, set her to a clinic, then another specialist till they found an orthopedic surgeon who gave her a cast. They paid only two hundred dollars for the whole service and then they drove her back to the hotel. No charge. As long as the embargo is in effect we will never know how much more abundant lives cubans could live. If you work on the resorts you have access to gifts brought in from tourists and more tips. Concrete is expensive for most cubans to maintain their homes. So many necessities are hard to come by and expensive. They are well educated people and polite. They cannot speak about heir government or petition against anything. and yes there are prostitutes who will sell themselves for cheap if your that pathetic to get a girl. Ive seen some pretty pathetic things go on in the U.S. that would never happen in my country so I have a slightly more understanding for somethings that go on in cuba, but not all. if you get a chance ..go and form your own opinion bring your respect with you and your humanity. |

The only AmeriKans who haven't been there are the simple minded ones who don't know how to work around the rules.
The Embargo has hurt Cuba and it's a poor country.. but most of the Caribbean is poor, so what it looks to ME would be totally different to someone coming from Amerika or Canada who had never been in the Caribbean before. |
