Havana, Cuba?

I am travelling to Varadero, Cuba in March but want to see Havana as well. What is the best way to do this?

At Varadero they will arrange guided bus tours to Havana. These tours are quite good. Do one of the guided tours, and then if you get a chance go back to Havana again on your own or with just a couple of other people for more exploring. We were are Marina Hemingway and first did a bus tour, and then a few days later went with another couple to Havana on our own and spent the day wandering around. It was a great day. Ask at Varadaro about hiring a vehicle and driver to take you to Havana and possibly to also pick you up to take you back. You can make this same type of arrangement to see more of the countryside. We hired with the same couple a van and driver for a day and saw lots of things - a tobacco farm and barn (which I surprising found really neat considering that I don't smoke), a rum distillery, had a boat ride through caves, stopped at roadside markets, went through the Vinales wine district, stopped in several villages, etc. I hope this helps.

Havana is about 2 hours drive from Varadero.

You can sign up for an organised trip - best to have at least one night in Havana.

Or you can hire a car to take you, spend a few nights in Havana (a hotel or a casa particular), get to know the city better.

You can book the havana trip from your hotel and is cheaper than booking it with the travel operator at the welcome meeting. We chose not to book as our daughter was only 6 at the time and did not think it was suitable for her, did hear good reports about it though. You HAVE to book to swim with dolphins though, you can get the photo and video of the experience and is fantastic.

Whoa I'm going to Varadero in March too, were going to book our trip to Havana with our holiday rep, I believe you can go by coach but it takes a while to get there and as the roads aren't the best in Cuba it would probably be a bit of a strain too, I know if you book via your holiday rep you get to spend time doing your own thing in Havana and a trip to the Flamingo Club in the evening plus a night in a hotel for about £120, we did the trip in 2006 and it was well worth the money, we went to Cayo Coco last time so it probably costs more to get to Havana from there, have a great time.

Tropicales
The best way is to do it through your tour group at the resort you´re staying at. Usually there is a day trip or an overnight stay with dinner, a Tropicana show and sites to see around Havana.
As well, you can always rent a car and drive through Havana. But if you do that, then you should go with others so as not to be alone and perhaps go with a Cuban you´ve befriended and trust who can show you around.

Enjoy your trip.

Do not miss it. Havana is one tour you should take when you go to Cuba. You will come away saying it was the highlight of your visit. A day trip from your resort should be about 75-80 Convertible Pesos which includes lunch although quite possibly a longer one which includes the show at the Tropicana will be offered. Check the links below for some info. January 8 I have just added a link with some of my photos from Havana,. They aren't great photos but you may enjoy seeing them
