we stayed there for two nights about four years ago - it is a "self catering" place but very relaxed. They had a bar right on the beach - couldn't ask for a better place to have sundowners ( I recommend the Antigua Sunset)
Try catching a local bus into town- we had such fun and everyone was so friendly. Word of warning though - on your way back at the main bus stop - they wait until the bus / taxi is full before they leave so you could be there a while.
Shirley Heights is a definite - amazing views although very touristy and lots of drunk people falling about. If you are interested in the history of the island, do a day tour with a guide. You get to see some wonderful places and that you probably wouldn't go to.
Find out if the legendary "Medicine man" is still at Coco Bay - he is one crazzzyyy man (must be all the dope) - good laugh as well.
Only one thing to watch out for - when you are on the beach, one or two locals come up to you with a piece of aloe and want to rub it on you to "protect" against sunburn and then want money. Usually it is a "young" aloe - which irritates your skin more than anything else.

Enjoy your holiday - I wish I could go again (sigh..)

Coming Up
I have. it is very peaceful, but very self catering. you are in stand alone townhouses, and there is nothing interesting in the area. you have to get a taxi to st john's.

I've not been to the Jolly Beach hotel, but I have stayed at the nearby Mango Bay Hotel in 1999. Apart from the obvious sunbathing, water sports etc. Things I would recommend to do in Antigua is visit the capital St.Johns, very good shopping areas and very reasonable. If you have the time and extra money try and get an excursion to Barbuda it's sister island, a short flight to one of the flattest islands on earth. Has the exclusive K Club resort where princess Diana used to go on holiday, superb beaches and friendly locals.

Back to Antigua, make sure you visit Shirley Heights, from where you can see a great deal of the island including Nelsons Harbour. Also visit Half Moon Bay, not sure if it's still the same, but there is a hotel at the beach that was damaged in a hurricane in about 1990 and has been left derelict since. But as there are about 360 odd beaches you are well and truly spoilt for choice!! Hope you enjoy your holiday!!

Not sure if it still the same as it was a few years ago since I visited but the airport is a lovely pink colour, very trendy!!

Jolly Beach is a great place to stay. Actually, my uncle owns a good bit of shares in that hotel. It's awesome and everything that you need is right there. It even has it's own helicopter landing pad. It's very spacious and the amenities are great. I'm certain that when you get there, you would want to see the rest of the island.

No, unfortunately not, but all I know is from this person I met at the airport in Barbados told me about her island (home), and I was fantisiced (sp?) by it.

what you usually do if you think the hotel is not up to standard that's get out

Jolly Beach Resort is very nice but somewhat out of the more active areas. If you prefer a getaway where you stay put it's ideal, got supermarket, casino, night club etc... you can always take a tour via taxi if you want to get away. If you prefer more activities and shopping around you might be better off at Sandals resort which is closer to the capital city of St. John's.

One thing's for sure is that You WILL ENJOY ANTIGUA!!!!
