Been there, liked it so much bought a house.
Expensive? yes, on the tourist side of the island. The hotels and restaurants on the hotel side are rarely frequented by the locals. Best bet...a kitchenette. Spend the $ when you want at choice places. I've never been impressed with the hotel restaurants, for the money go to the Flying Fishbone and El Gaucho. Drinks? by all means but do so at La Cabana for happy hour or get your free ones while gambling the high rise hotels.
Spend your money on a Vespa scooter rental, it'll get you around the island for half the cost and is so much fun! You can tour the island on your own for little cost.
Snorkel Baby's Beach...it's like swimming in an aquarium since it's only waist deep. Eat lunch at Coco Beach (around the bend from Baby's) with your feet in the sand.
Night life is alot of fun in Oranjestad...plenty of clubs and live entertainment as you stroll the Seaport Village.
You'll have a great time, golf, tennis, Harley Davidson rentals, windsurfing, the Taboo boat tour...more than enough to do.
The bad: Don't leave your camera in the car, the heat will wreck it and because of car theft, if someone sees it, you might lose it. Keep mosquito spray on hand, if it rains you may be lunch.

I have, it was great. I stayed at the Radisson for 5 days with my then girlfriend, we didn't really stray too far from there but had a great time and recommend it. |
