Ah, the misconceptions of Jamaica. Love reading posts from those who just dont have a clue.
I've been there many times, all in Negril. If you go, dont go anywhere but negril, thank me later. Most people will lock themselves away on a big resort bc they are "scared" of the stories. Lots are true when it comes to places like Mo Bay and Ocho Rios, NOT in Negril. The difference is night and day, trust me on that one. Lots of people go to the other places, but it's in Negril that the people have been coming back for 20-30 years. There's a reason for that. 7 miles of white sand beach!! Some say it's not safe to go out, it's MADE to go out and wander the beach all day. Little hotels, resturants, bars all along the beach for you to enjoy. Don't think there is a Jamaican on the beach in Negril you cant walk up to and BS with like they're your next door neighbor, friendliest people you will ever meet. Not to mention some of the smaller, locally owned hotels with rooms to be had for about $50, and pretty nice too. Split that with a friend and call it cheap. How much time are you gonna spend in there anyway??? There's 7 miles of beach outside your door!!! But if you want all-inclusive and be locked away on a resort, save the airfare and go to Florida, you want a truely enjoyable and memorable experience, Go to Negril!
If you are planning, a few pointers.......
Tan before you go.
Tan=been there awhile, heard all the sales lines already
No tan=just got there, $$$$$
But realize you are in a FOREIGN country, respect.
You might think of some as a pain in the *ss, but this is how they earn money, respect that and you WILL be respected back.
Instead of getting mad about it, have fun with it! The barter system is in FULL effect down there and price tags are just a starting point.

I went in January for a week. I stayed in a resort called FDR Pebbles located in Falmouth right by the ocean (30 minutes from Montego Bay.) It was awesome! I highly recommend this resort, free food and drink, tons of things to do, the staff are by far the friendliest I've ever met and I was more relaxed than I've ever been. The Jamaican people were friendly, laid back and great partiers (except for the people trying to sell you stuff that don't own a store), I saw a natural wonder of the world (Glistning Waters), got REAL experiance with reggae and got a bunch of experiance with local customs and activities (soccer, beach volleyball, water polo, scuba diving, snorkling, sailing, wind surfing. Didn't do cricket unfortunatly because I thought that would've been a treat to play in Jamaica. I went to Ocho Rios for a day and other than that I stayed in Falmouth. Here's a couple of tips about the customs (I'm not speaking for all Jamaicans, just the ones I met.) Jamaicans speak a very fast English slang called Patois when they're speaking to each other, don't even try to understand what they're saying because it's so fast. If a Jamaican makes a joke about you, don't take it personally because sarcasm is a very popular form of humour in Jamaica. If someone tries to sell you something and you don't want it, just keep saying "no", no matter how many times they ask, nothing else works. You get used to their "style" very quickly (you'll know what I'm talking about once you get there), you constantly and quickly learn the customs, the attitude, the rhythm and even some of the Patois. A common handshake I learned there was to join hands like your shaking hands and scratch your thumbs together off to your left three times. I was only there a week and I felt like I was Indiana Jones by the end of the week. You'll love it there, it's a place that's really different, in terms of style, look, climate, rhythm and people but in a very good way. It's not nearly as unsafe as people say it is, the only person that even tried to get in our room other than us was the cleaning lady. You'll have a great time.

I am Jamaican but I currently go to school in the US. I went home for Spring break with my boyfriend and we stayed at the Crane Ridge Hotel in Ocho Rios for two days. It is centrally located. Everything is close by including the beach, margaritaville, dunn's river falls.
You'll definitely have a blast there.
Good Luck

just got back from jamaica. we went to negril and i loved it. almost everything can be reached walking barefoot along the beach (7 miles!). we stayed at white sands, which is a very simple, family run hotel. nothing special, but cheap and clean. would not go to an all-inclusive resort - you will get to tempted to stay there instead of discovering your surrounderings. also think they are a slap in the face to the local poverty.
the beach is beautiful, the island is lush and if you take a catamaran along the coast, you will feel like you're in pirates of the caribbean. food is awesome, lots of spice. you will definitely get approached by street/beach vendors a lot, so be prepared to say NO a lot.
to round up my experience, it was paradise to me and my week was filled with lots of smiles and laughter.

lil'mexican girl
I did, I liked it, and I went there to visit my family members, and I stayed in a hotel for about3 1/2 days... it was REALLY cool!!!!!!!!

Last summer my wife and I went to Jamaica and stayed at Breezes Runaway Bay. We loved the resort, the Jamaican people, and the country. What a wonderful place!

We searched at TripAdvisor.com to find the resort that fit us and that one did. It was such a fun resort and the entire trip was just great. The research we did at that website made for a "no surprises" vacation.

remember heath 4 ever
I have been to Jamaica 4 times in my fourteen short years and all visits have been to the Montego Bay area, I would reccomend

Ritz Carlton Rose Hall
*Great golf course and hunted plantation cool stuff for kids. beautiful beaches and two poolside restaurants

P.S. you MUST go to Dunn's River Falls no matter where you stay an AMAZING experience

My husband and i got married at Breezes Runaway Bay last April and it was absolutely breathtaking!!! We are actually going back next month for our 1 year anniversary. They gave us a free nights stay for choosing their resort for our wedding. They just recently did a $20 million dollar renovation. It is even more beautiful just looking at the website- I can't wait to see it in person. We are a young couple and it was perfect for us..

No, but my sister has, and she stayed in Negril. I saw the photos... BEAUTIFUL!

I stayed in Nagril, Jamaica......was wonderful!!
Stayed in an 'all inclusive' resort ('Beaches"). I personally, think that's the best thing to do there since they say that it's not too safe to venture out on your own in Jamaica!
The resort offers all sorts of water sports, good meal plan and it's especially great for families.
We took extra one day tour of "Ocho Rios'....waterfalls.
Another day we went to 'Jake's Cafe'....beautiful sunset!!
We also spent one day horseback riding in the Nagril river banks!
It was a awesome, stress free vacation!!
