Have you ever been to Puerto Rico?

I'm going on a mission trip to Puerto Rico this summer. Where are some good places to visit?

If you getthe opportunity( I know missionary work is time consuming) make an effort to go out to Vieques. They have a Bioluminescent Bay that is amazing. I think anyone that is able to should go once in their lives. La Parguera has one as well but its no where near as vibrant as the one in Vieques.
Vieques is a tiny Island to the east of the Puerto Rico Mainland. You'll need to either ferry over or take a small plane trip. I recommend the plane trip its about $20 each way but it s a 10-15 minute flight and a lot more reliable than the ferry.
Check out this website for more details

Lol yea! Being Fully Puerto Rican and used to live in Puerto Rico, I have to say that there are so many things that are beautiful and worth noticing in Puerto Rico. It is a great place to visit. Your never bored and its absolutely breathtaking. First of all the food is great, especially if your not on a diet! The beaches, the rainforest, El Yunque[gets its own category, its awesome], the people there are so nice and your always having fun! My culture is so imporant to me and probably to alot of other people. We have our own slang and way of communicating. The music there is the best and so imporatnt to the culture. anothing so imporant is probably family. I have family in Puerto Rico and every year, all of my family gets to gether in Puerto Rico for holidays like Christmas and its the best feeling in the world. Family is so important in Puerto Rican and genereally Hispanic culture. Another great thing about Puerto Rico, is simply beacause its so relaxing. The fact that you can tie a hammock to 2 trees and just lay there is amazing. Its best that you can breath it all in. The feeling is wonderful. And the weather is almost always nice. People are always saying that the sites are the best in puerto rico, but there are so many little things the makes Puerto Rico well, great to see.

If your looking for sites to see, I named some of them earlier. El yunque, all different rainforests, beaches. My grandparents are from Camuey, so a realli nice place to visit is The caves. one of my favorite places is Old San Juan.If you are coming to PR, check La Parguera, Rainforest El Yunque, The Lighthouse of Rincon, Vieques, El Morro. Ponce feels very historic and its such a nice place to visit. I think the best thing do to is travel outside of San Juan, because then you can truly enjoy Puerto Rico. San Juan is very Americanized and the real culture begins when you go to different places. The problem is that most people only go to San Juan, Old San Juan, and they don't get to truly experience Puerto Rico. El Yunque Rain Forest is the only rain forest in the US. Camuy Caves are the 3rd largest caves in the world. They have 3 bioluminescent Bays(of only 6 worldwide & PR's are the best) which is water that glows in the dark when you touch it. The largest 1 piece radio telescope in the world(from movie Contact) in Arecibo.

Yes, and I love it. When I went, I spent time touring old San Juan and went to the Bacardi factory. The forts were both nice as was the artisan market. When I go back next year I plan to visit the rain forest, the beach, and other parts of the country.

Go to :
Culebra, Vieques, San Juan, El Yunque, Arecibo's Observatory, Caja de Muertos(have a ferry on saturday and sundays), Monte del Estado(west)

good luck!

I live in Puerto Rico and have had many family members from the states come to visit over the years, which has always left me the Island guide. In order of absolute must (I am leaving out the tourist traps)
1. Vieques. The biobay (only if there is no moon) and Vieques still has some great hard to get to dream beaches.
2. Guanica. Guilligans Island. Beautiful mangroves teaming with life.
3. You must see the central region take the scenic drive through the mountains. And if you want to stay I also recommend Casa Grande in Utuado.
4. El Yunque. Breathtaking
5. If your health, and stamina are good take the Adventuras Tierra caving excursion. If not, go to the Camuy caves and take the tour.
6. Guavate, a must to try the perfection of Puerto Rican Lechon (roasted pork).

Ionsopherical Satellite in Arecibo. it is the biggest radar/satellite in the world.
And of course the towns of Dorado, Arecibo, Hatillo and Camuy have museums.

Stone Tower or Torre de Piedra in Maricao. a tower made of stone in the mountains was and still is a place to look out and observe all around.
Caguana Indian Ceremonial Center in Utuado

Puente Historico de Hierro or Historical old Time Iron Bridge in Moca. the first and still standing iron bridge.
Museo Mundillo de Puerto Rico. a museum dedicated to mundilla which is a special art of making lace by hand using special thread, pins, and other hand made instruments. This is considered an art due to the wonderful works that are hand made. One is a large curtain of the map of Puerto Rico ( the islands outline) that took a long time to make by hand by various artistan woman skilled in this art.

I just mentioned a few places because there is so much to see and do. If you do have transportation (rented car ) then you can go visit the small central towns they are:
Aguas Buenas, East of Caguas and South of Bayamon
Cidra home of the Patita Hecha bread -Southeast of Aguas Buenas. Patita Hecha bread is the bread that is two loaves entwined and is delicious. Cidra is a quiet town and you can walk around the plaza at night.
Cayey a mountain town with breath taking scenary and the Monumento al Jibaro or the Monument dedicated to the country peasant man and his familyl. There you can stop and look out at the other towns and mountains.
