Have you ever been to cuba? |
i just got back monday, i live in the UK, i went to Holguin.
what did you think? good points, bad points? places you visited?
the people are so very friendly and welcoming yet everything is owned by the govrment, their houses are very shabby although they paint them bright colours and most unemployed yet they all seem so happy and proud of their country :)
amazing how people so poor have a good sence of community and happiness yet with nothing of their own, it really made me think?
i have only seen one part of cuba, and two weeks maybe this is not the true part of all cuba. |

We loved Holguin we went to Playa Esmeralda beach, in the Natural Park of BahĂa Naranjo, 5 km from Guardalavaca in the province of Holguin in the north-east of Cuba. 56 km distance from from the provincial capital and 72 km from the international airport.
We have just returned from this hotel having enjoyed 2 excellent weeks.
On first impressions the room seemed a bit dated especially the bathroom however it catered for our every need and was spotlessly clean! The beds were large and comfy. Each room has a mini bar that is restocked on a daily basis, also cable TV, coffee maker and CD player. The maid visits every day to make beds, replenish towels and toiletries.
We enjoyed the huge variety of food at the hotel. The buffet caters for all tastes with plenty to choose from at breakfast including cereals, fresh fruit, yummy cakes, bacon, fried eggs and freshly made ommlettes. The evening meal offered just as much choice with fresh meat and fish cooked infront of you to your preference, pasta, rice, freshly made ceasar salad and lots of delicious desserts! We visited all of the a la carte restaurants during our stay. We were a little disappointed with our meal at El Bohio but loved the other 3. It is a must to book a show table at the Japanese restaurant, the food and the show given by the chefs is unmissable! For lunch we ate at the beach restaurant or the pool restaurant both serving a wide selection of food with a lovely atmosphere. The staff in the each restaurant cannot do enough to ensure you have everything that you want.
Most of our days were spent at the pool, which was very quiet most of the time and very relaxing with plenty of sunbeds to go round with the cushions doubling up as floating lilos!!
We enjoyed many activites while we were in at the hotel including Tennis, kayaking, horse riding and snorkleling. But they also have many more on offer.
Check out the board outside the animation team club house for trips on offer from the hotel. We went on a very insightful trip to a fishing village with 1 of the animation team and met some local people and visited their homes. We would definatly reccommend it! The other trip that we went on was through First Choice where we visited Holguin, went on a steam train and visited a cigar factory it was a good trip to experience a bit more of Cuba's culture. A trip to Guardalavaca market on a horse drawn carriage is another must. The driver will drop you off and wait for you for an hour. An hour really is enough because the market is very small!
We took a Day tour to Havana booked at the Hotel tourist desk and just loved it!
Overall we had an excellent holiday the hotel was great and the food was fabulous. We would go back tomorrow if we could!!! |

Yes, I lived there for more than 40 years until I could escape.
Good points:
Our country has excellent beaches, especially varadero, with sands as thin as sugar. The water is so shallow that you can walk a long way before having to swim.
We have other natural wonders. Cuevas de Bellamar, el pico Turquino, Soroa ( in Pinar del RĂo )
We are very friendly, very expressive. We greet you in a way that perhaps you have never seen and invite you to come in and have a drink of rum
Bad things: we are ruled by a totalitarian, comunist, terrible dictatorship that controls EVERYTHING
To I*archie:
I am glad that you recognize ( the only one here ) the reality about the Cuban government. Finally somebody gets in contact with reality.
That is not the only thing that sucks. My email is r.enrique89@yahoo.com . I would be delighted if you contact me. We may exchange information |

I have
Good points:
Our position in the Caribbean gives us a strategic position for tourism and commerce. We don't have dangerous animals, our climate is very mild, although a little cold in winter ( sometimes ). We had abundance of fruits and other vegetables. Our sugar is the best in the world ( I could appreciate that when I came to the USA )
You are right. In Cuba our neighbors are our family. Frequently we gather to play domino, or something similar.
We ARE proud of our country. Here in Miami and south Florida in general, we have created a small community that resembles our country.
Downtown of Miami is exactly like downtown of La Habana was in 1958
A defense mechanism ( I am a physician ) in us is to make fun of whatever is a disaster. When some new calamity appears, right away comes the jokes
Bad points ( since you asked ):
Jc22ny, thank you for letting us know how well you ate in my country. That really pleases me.
Now, please allow me to tell my experience:
A few years ago, I went back to see my wife and I ate at her house. The meal was splendid:
a little broken rice with some plantains.
When I saw it, I went immediately to buy food with dollars for the family. Luckly I had enough
Another point, our country is dominated by a totalitarian dictatorship that controls each and every activity.
The country follows musolini's motto:
"Nothing out of the State, nothing against the State, all for the State" |

I have been in Cuba for many years.
Good points:
Our country is very beautiful. Excellent beaches, lovely rivers and landscapes. We are very friendly .
Bad points:
You say that we "seem" happy.
Just what do you want us to ? Die of sadness ?
We must live there . We cannot escape unless we have a chance. We try to make the best from our terrible situation
Our country is ruled by a terrible dictatorship, a comunist one.
We have no freedom, very few options. We must struggle every day to survive
Anyone who has tried to eliminate fidel, is now dead, in jail, or in exile
Nobody cares about our situation
To trying to have fun for ever:
If you go to Cuba, you have two options:
1 - Do as so many people do here and see Cuba only as a beautiful thing and you talk, talk, talk about how beautiful is the country and the people
2 - Or, you can go and see the beautiful and the not so beautiful aspects. The terrible aspects that the tourist refuse to see
That is your choice |
|

The best of all is fidel, a guy that has been able to stay in power and oppress his own people with an iron fist for 50 years.
Still, many people worship him and refuse to see what he really is.
I must say that he really has been very clever |

I have indeed been there.
What I think ? I think that we have the distinction of being the country with the oldest dictatorship in the world .
If you saw a part of Cuba, I would say that there is no great difference, unless you go to the Havana vieja, that is falling down in pieces .
You should talk with the opposition and they could give you a more precise idea of Cuba.
I must warn you. If the State Security sees you ( and they see everything ) talking with the opposition they will call you to Villa Marista |

Yes, I have been in Cuba.
Our country is beautiful, with nice weather, the best beaches, very friendly people.
I was born in Santa Clara city. I have visited Oriente, the zone of MayarĂ, HolguĂn, Bayamo, Cienfuegos, and other places
During the independence war, Bayamo was burnt by the population to prevent it from falling in the hands of the enemy.
But the image of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre was taken out before by the principal men of the independence war.
In the sanctuary close to Santiago de Cuba, the Virgin, together with the flag, the anthem, and the shield, represents the Cuban nation . I was there a few years ago
We are friendly . That is our nature
Bad points:
Our country is governed by a ruthless tyrany. Everyone who tried to opose it is dead, in prison, or the exile
Enough ? |

Yes, I was in Cuba for many years. I could only escape a few years ago.
I would love to return, but not until fidel and the brother are not on this world
Well, you already mentioned that everything is owned by the State. Don't you know that that is the characteristic of totalitarian governments ?
We ARE PROUD of our country, despite having a comunist government that makes us slaves
We make fun of our bad luck as a defense mechanism , even if we don't know where we can find our next meal, or the government is watching
It is more or less the same in the whole country
Ah, you say that we are talented. Thank you.
A group of Cubans a few years ago, transformed an old truck into something that could float, and came here.
I have the pictures. Amazing !
Sad thing. We could be doing something better if we didn't have fidel and the little brother |

I have been to Cuba, in fact I lived there 5 years, and it was great. Like you said the people are totally friendly and welcoming and the government owning everything totally sucks (did you know they denied help from the U.S. after hurricane Gustav because of the stupid government). It is amazing how people with so little can be so happy when people here in the US can take everything for granted. Living in Cuba was a great experience, I don't remember much because I was just a toddler but I do remember that it was a great place and I can't wait to visit it! |

Yes, that is what makes Cuba and the people attractive...in that even though they are dealing with hardships, they are always making the most and best of their situation. They value family and friendships and still have a love and zest for life.
There is genuine warmth and hospitality. With all we have in life, we sometimes cannot find happiness either. Cubans are clean and dignified...and if anything, they command respect. They also possess a lot of talent.
It is true and sad to see how the situation is in Cuba. Mind you, not everywhere in Cuba is run down...there are different parts of Cuba and each area possessing different 'personalities'.
I'm sure you'll want to go back very soon. The friends you've made will never forget you. Make sure you keep in touch with them :-) |
